ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision at Flagler in a Peach Belt Conference contest Saturday.
The Pacers are now 10-3 overall and 3-2 in league play. The Saints are 6-4 overall and 2-0 against conference competition.
Taylor Stratton led the offense by posting 17 kills and hitting .306.
Julia Forster notched 14 kills and tallied 11 digs for a double-double effort.
Christine Carroll and
Kassy Johannsen notched five kills apiece. Carroll hit .833 in the contest.
Amber Hendry and Teelon totaled four kills apiece while
Alicia Hines and
Shawn Hotson contributed three kills each. Okwuenne Ogbogu added a pair of kills.
Emily Teelon dished out a match-best 48 assists while
Danielle Mercer garnered a match-high 18 digs.
After falling behind 3-0 in the opening set, head coach
Glenn Cox's team got on the board via a service error by the home team.
Rebecca Martinez followed it up with an ace to make it 3-2. An error by the Saints tied it at 3-3 before Johannsen's kill gave the Pacers a 4-3 edge.
Trailing 17-12, Forster and Hines netted back-to-back kills to make it 17-14. The Pacers fell behind 20-15 before Forster slammed home a kill and served up an ace. A miscue by Flagler and an ace by Forster made it 20-19. With the score 21-19, Stratton answered the call with back-to-back kills, knotting the contest at 21-21. As the score went back-and-forth, Stratton's kill made it 24-23 in favor of the visitors. Cox's team closed out the first set with a 25-23 win on an error by Sara Davis.
USC Aiken fell behind 13-8 in the second set, but Hotson started a spurt with a kill. The Saints had back-to-back errors before Mercer recorded an ace to pull the team within one at 13-12. However, Cox's squad could get no closer in the 25-18 loss.
The Pacers fell behind in the third set 5-2. USC Aiken was unable to pull any closer than two in the frame. Trailing 22-14, Stratton and Forster notched back-to-back kills before Teelon and Carroll combined for a block. Another error by Flagler made it 22-18. After a time-out, Stratton stuffed a shot and Teelon had a kill to make it 22-20, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.
USC Aiken got behind 8-3 in the fourth set and could not make up enough ground in the 25-15 loss.
