Stratton Reaches 1,000 Career Kills As Pacers Cage Bearcats

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team registered a 3-0 win at Lander Wednesday evening as Taylor Stratton reached the 1,000-kill mark for her career.

The Pacers are now 11-3 overall and 4-2 against conference competition.

Taylor Stratton and Julia Forster led the way with 12 kills apiece. Christine Carroll slammed home seven while hitting .538. Emily Teelon dished out 36 assists while Danielle Mercer set a school record with 28 digs.

Stratton recorded a double-double by notching 14 digs. Shawn Hotson had 12 digs while Rebecca Martinez chipped in 11.

In the opening frame, head coach Glenn Cox's team jumped out to a 9-5 advantage. After a point for the home squad, Forster got things going for USC Aiken. Her kill sparked four-point run for the Pacers. During the run, rookie Carroll slammed home a pair of passes from Teelon.

Leading 13-7, Cox's group embarked on a 6-0 run to put the set out of reach. During the spurt, Stratton had three kills while Teelon and Kassy Johannsen combined for a block. A 3-0 run gave the set to the visitors, including Hotson's kill for the clincher.

The second set was tightly contested through the midway point. Tied at 12-12, an attack error by Lander gave the Pacers the spark they would need. The team reeled off eight straight points, including three kills by Stratton and a pair by Hotson.

Cox's team cruised to the 25-16 victory behind a kill from Carroll and an attack error by the home squad.

In the final frame, USC Aiken jumped out to an 11-3 lead, forcing a time-out by the Bearcats. Kassy Johannsen served up an ace before an attack error from Lander and a kill by Forster made it 11-3.

After the break, the Pacers continued to lead, taking a 17-9 advantage. The team made mass substitutions and continued to thrive. Fittingly enough, Stratton's kill concluded the match with the 25-15 victory.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Francis Marion. The match is slated to start at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
