AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team registered a 3-2 win at Georgia Southwestern in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams.
The Pacers are now 2-5 on the season and 1-0 against conference foes. The Hurricanes are 1-5-1 on the year and 0-1 against PBC competition.
In the opening moments, head coach
Ike Ofoje's team struck first. In the eighth minute of play,
Ryan Dwyer found
Samuel Andrews, who one-timed it into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
However, Georgia Southwestern tied the match two minutes later. Ofoje's team quickly countered.
At the 12:51 mark, senior
Rodrigo Goncalves found rookie
Roberto Biendicho for his second career goal and a 2-1 lead.
The score would remain the same until there was less than 20 minutes to play in the match. Then, the Hurricanes managed to tie it at 2-2.
At the 74:17 mark,
Kayque Stoffel broke through for his first career goal, which turned out to be the golden tally on a break-away.
In the 82
nd minute, Biendicho nearly made it 4-2, but his shot missed high of the frame. After defending a corner kick by the home team in the 84
th minute, Ofoje's squad pushed forward. The team earned three straight corner kicks in a 40-second span.
At the 88:51 mark,
Adria Dalmau nearly scored a goal, but his attempt was saved.
For the match, USC Aiken held an 18-17 advantage in shots. Ofoje's squad managed to post eight shot on goal compared to six for the home team.
The offense was stellar, earning 15 corner kicks to 11 for the Hurricanes.
Orlando Moldavan played all 90 minutes between the pipes, earning four saves to pick up his first career win.
