AIKEN, S.C – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team lost a 3-2 decision to visiting Erskine Wednesday evening in a non-conference contest.
The Pacers are now 1-5 on the season while the Flying Fleet improves to 4-1.
In the 16
th minute,
Andre Simmond blasted a shot toward the frame that got blocked a few yards out from the end-line. Three minutes later, the Flying Fleet struck for a 1-0 lead off a long ball.
Head coach
Ike Ofoje's team nearly tied it at the 26:53 mark when
Rodrigo Goncalves headed the ball, but it hit the post and trickled away, keeping the contest at 1-0. Erskine managed to push the margin to 2-0 minutes later.
With under five minutes to play in the opening half, Simmond took a pair of corner kicks and
Adria Dalmau rocketed a shot that sailed three feet high of the goal, sending the teams into intermission with the score at 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
After an inspirational talk by Ofoje, the Pacers cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 50
th minute when
Roberto Biendicho tallied his first career goal off an assist from Simmond.
At the 72:53 mark,
Nathan Shanko crossed the ball to the far side of the post.
Adria Dalmau controlled it and promptly blasted home the tying score.
Five minutes later, Erskine scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
Orlando Maldovan played all 90 minutes between the pipes. He registered a save.
USC Aiken held an 8-5 advantage in shots and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Pacers return to action Saturday when they open league play at Georgia Southwestern at 3:30 p.m.
