AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team put forth a solid effort but the comeback attempt fell short in a 2-1 loss at Shorter Thursday evening.
The Pacers are now 1-3 on the season.
Head coach
Ike Ofoje's team registered a corner kick at the 19:03 mark, but the squad was unable to get a shot off. The team's first attempt came via the foot of
Nathan Shanko at 22:41. However, his shot sailed wide of the frame.
Andre Simmond netted his first shot of the match at the 27:20 mark, but it was saved by Austen Trevers.
Shorter struck with a goal in the 30
th minute off a rebound for a 1-0 advantage.
The last shot of the first half for the Pacers came from
Ryan Dwyer with 2:27 to play, but it was stopped by the keeper.
Shorter pushed the margin to 2-0 with a tally in the 48
th minute of play. However,
Chase Boulton kept the score at 2-0 with three solid saves in a span of a couple minutes.
The Pacers pushed forward near the 70-minute mark as Simmond had a shot that was saved. Dwyer's shot attempt was blocked in the 72
nd minute.
Brett Smith rocketed a pair of shots that missed wide of the goal.
In the 86
th minute, USC Aiken was awarded a penalty kick. However, the shot was saved by Shorter, helping the score remain 2-0.
At the 87:17 mark, Simmond broke through, netting a goal to make it 2-1. Just 22 seconds later,
Billy Johns blasted a shot, but it was wide.
For the match, USC Aiken was outshot 17-10. Ofoje's team had two corner kicks compared to six by the home squad. The visitors were whistled for offsides on five occasions.
For the match, Boulton registered five saves.
