Moore Notches First Career Goal Against South Carolina State

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team lost a tightly contested 3-2 match Wednesday evening in a contest against Division I South Carolina State.

The Pacers are now 2-4 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 2-5-1.

After controlling much of the first half, Catherine McHale broke through the defense and found Sarah Moore, who gathered the pass and blasted home a shot to beat the keeper for a 1-0 advantage. McHale was credited with an assist on the play.

The Bulldogs tied the match prior to halftime off a set piece.

With the score tied at 1-1, head coach Hilary George's team pulled ahead at the 50:38 mark. This time, Moore found Monica Armendariz on a breakaway. Moore's pass led Armendariz, who promptly corralled the ball from close in before finding the back of the net to make it 2-1.

However, SCSU quickly countered after the restart. Just 21 seconds after USC Aiken scored, the visitors answered to make it 2-2.

In the 53rd minute, McHale had a shot from 25 yards out, but it was blocked. The Pacers withstood a corner kick from the Bulldogs before answering with a corner kick of their own via Tori Caldwell at the 63:26 mark. Armendariz fired a shot toward the frame, but was turned away by Taylor Brittingham.

Moore tried to put George's team up, but the shot was saved in the 68th minute of play.

In the 72nd minute, the Bulldogs managed to strike with what turned out to be the game-winning goal from 20 yards out.

USC Aiken controlled the ball late in the match, earning a corner kick at the 88:17 mark. However, the team was unable to get a shot off as the Bulldogs held on for the 3-2 victory.

For the match, USC Aiken out-shot the visitors 13-10. Karin Cadwalader played all 90 minutes between the pipes, registering three saves. George's team accounted for four corner kicks in the match.

Individually, Moore and McHale each had four shots. Moore registered three on frame while accounting for a goal and an assist. Armendariz had three shots, including two on goal and scored the other tally for USC Aiken.

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they travel to No. 1 Columbus State. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
