Each week throughout the 2016 USC Aiken women's soccer season, the sports information office will produce weekly notes.
Pacer Fandemonium
This week, USC Aiken will host its annual Pacer Fandemonium. For the second straight year, the women's soccer team will be playing during the event. Pacer Fandemonium takes place from 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, at Pacer Pit. The women's team takes on South Carolina State starting at 7 p.m.
Back On Track
After starting the season 2-0, the University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team has hit a rough patch, dropping three straight. However, the opponents have been against some of the best in the region – and nationally – as the Pacers took on No. 10 Carson-Newman Monday. The challenge is just as tough as the squad hosts Division I South Carolina State Wednesday before embarking in league play – against No. 1 Columbus State.
Missed Opportunities
The Pacers were underdogs against the No. 10 Eagles, but it doesn't mean the team just folded. Instead, USC Aiken got knocked down and quickly got up, tightening the defense while pushing forward offensively.
Sarah Drury had the most of the opportunities, tallying four shots in the match, including one on goal. A pair of her shots were well placed, but just a foot or so too wide from the frame.
Aggressive Is Good
USC Aiken took several chances against Carson-Newman, forcing the No. 10 Eagles to step up defensively. Multiple times, the defense, led by
Tori Caldwell and
Abby Frick, played the ball forward to
Sarah Moore, who created opportunities for herself or her teammates. Moore and
Sarah Drury each had attempts on goal that outstanding shots, but the keeper managed to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
Cadwalader's Nice Stops
Junior
Karin Cadwalader saw the No. 10 Eagles take 18 shots, including 15 on goal. Although the visitors won the match, Cadwalader had six very nice saves in the loss. She stopped a pair of breakaways and forced the Eagles into a bad pass and turnover on a two-on-one breakaway.
Brye's Big Goal
Last season, then-sophomore
Brye Epley scored the first goal of the match against South Carolina State. She gave the Pacers a 1-0 lead at the 49:54 mark and it enabled USC Aiken to take back a 1-1 double-overtime draw against the Division I foe.
Inside The Numbers
This week, USC Aiken will play a contest on Sept. 14 and Sept. 17. The Pacers are 0-1 on Sept. 14 but are 2-3 in matches played on Sept. 17 since the school started soccer. Since starting the program, USC Aiken is 36-56-9 on contests played on Wednesdays (40.0 percent). The squad has won 30.4 percent of its matches on Saturdays (34-83-8).Â
Against The Opponents
This week, USC Aiken will take on South Carolina State and Columbus State. The Pacers are 0-1-1 in the all-time series against SC State, having tied the team last year. USC Aiken is 0-14 in the all-time series against the Cougars.
