WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team garnered a 67-58 road win at Winston-Salem State Saturday afternoon in a non-conference affair.
The Pacers improve to 2-2 on the season while the Rams fall to 0-4.
Jasmine Carter paced the victors with a game-high 21 points. She also registered three assists and three steals.
Rachelle Aupont and
Kwajelin Farrar each netted 12 points while Aupont snagged a team-best 11 rebounds for a double-double. Farrar snagged eight boards to go along with two blocks in the win.
Carly Gilreath and
Alexis Ware each contributed seven points.
Emry Tsitouris corralled six boards in the contest.
For the game, USC Aiken posted 18 second-chance points compared to 13 by the home squad. The Pacers also controlled the paint with a 34-28 advantage.
In the first half, head coach
Mark Miller's team jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Farrar tied the game off a pass from
Alexis Ware at the 7:55 mark.
Jasmine Carter hit a pair of charity tosses with 7:32 on the clock for a 4-2 edge. Ware buried a three-ball off a pass from Farrar for a five-point edge before
Carly Gilreath drained a jumper at the 4:00 mark for the 9-2 lead.
The Rams tied the contest at 9-9 and the teams traded buckets before Aupont converted a lay-up for a 13-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
Miller's group regained its seven-point margin on a lay-up by
Emily Waters with 8:43 to play before halftime. However, the advantage dwindled to just two on a pair of occasions, including with 26 ticks on the clock before intermission. USC Aiken, though, maintained a 24-22 lead heading into the second half.
In the opening half, the Pacers canned just 24.3 percent of their shots from the floor, but 14 offensive boards helped the team maintain the two-point edge.
A quick start to the third stanza allowed Miller's team to take a 40-27 lead. Up 30-27, Carter buried a shot. Farrar hit an inside attempt before Carter converted a lay-up. Carter went back to work, taking a pass from Gilreath for a jumper before returning the favor as Gilreath finished for the 13-point advantage, forcing a 30-second time-out by WSSU.
After the break in action, Miller's team continued to push forward. The squad poured in 25 points in the quarter en route to a 49-34 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
USC Aiken saw its lead dip to 10 points, 62-52, with 2:38 to play. However, Gilreath canned a pair of free throws 18 seconds later to push the margin back to 12.
WSSU canned a three-pointer on the ensuing possession, but that marked the last time the Rams would score until the closing seconds.
Carter drilled a three-pointer off a pass from
Jasmine Coach with 28 seconds to play, giving the visitors a 67-55 lead.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they play at Shaw at 11 a.m.
