AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team lost a 2-1 overtime match to Flagler Wednesday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 2-7 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Saints are 4-5-1 overall and 4-2 against conference competition.
Head coach
Ike Ofoje's team earned a few corner kicks in the first portion of the opening half, but
Andre Simmond's shot was wide of the goal.
Roberto Biendicho's attempt was stopped by the keeper as the score remained tied at 0-0.
In the 16
th minute, the Saints, who had a corner kick seconds before, found the back of the net for an early 1-0 advantage.
Ofoje subbed in
Kayque Stoffel at the 17:05 mark. Four minutes later, Simmond found Stoffel for the match-tying score. Simmond dribbled up the field and flicked it to Stoffel on the right, who quickly one-timed it past the keeper for the 1-1 contest.
The Pacers had a pair of quick chances, but
Adria Dalmau's attempt was saved while Simmond's shot was blocked. In the 32
nd minute,
Rodrigo Goncalves narrowly missed on an opportunity, keeping the contest at 1-1. Just before halftime, Dominic Duffell hit the crossbar and the teams entered the second half with the score tied at 1-1.
A solid defense helped USC Aiken push the match into overtime. The Saints had an opportunity from point-blank range, but
Nader Fakih backed up the Pacers' keeper and booted a ball destined for the back of the goal near the midfield stripe.
In the waning seconds of regulation, Flagler had an opportunity, but the USC Aiken defense was up to the challenge.
At the 97:18 mark, Flagler took a free kick from 30 yards out and connected in the box for the game-winning score.
For the match, USC Aiken was out-shot 13-11.
Orlando Maldovan played every minute between the pipes and registered five saves compared to three by the Saints.
Flagler took 13 corner kicks while holding USC Aiken to six.
The Pacers' next match is supposed to be against Lander on Saturday. However, due to the weather an announcement about the next match will be made later this week.
