Shanko’s Score Lifts Pacers Past Falcons

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team powered home a goal off a set piece with under five minutes remaining in regulation to defeat Montevallo 2-1 on Senior Day.

The Pacers are now 4-12 on the year and conclude the regular season with a 3-6 conference mark. The Falcons conclude the regular season with an 11-5 record, including a 4-5 record against league foes.

Montevallo registered a corner kick and a shot in the fifth minute, but the attempt went wide of the frame. In the sixth minute, Roberto Biendicho dribbled up the left side and made a short pass to Adria Dalmau, who promptly played the ball into the lower left side of the goal for a 1-0 edge.

The first half was played near the midfield stripe, with neither team getting much traction until Jordan Misiri blasted an attempt from 20 yards out. However, it was saved, keeping the contest at 1-0 at the 19:38 mark.

The Falcons' first great attempt came in the 32nd minute of play, but a shot was blocked by the USC Aiken defense. Despite an excellent shot attempt from Nathan Shanko at the 41:15 mark, the score remained 1-0 heading into intermission.

Montevallo managed to tie the contest after the ball was pinged around the box in the 59th minute of play. From four yards out, Orlando Maldovan was unable to deflect the close-range shot by the visitors.

With just 4:30 left in regulation, USC Aiken earned a corner kick. Misiri, on the far side of the pitch, played a perfect ball to the near side of the post. Shanko went up among three defenders and headed the ball into the far side of the goal for a 2-1 advantage.

For the match, USC Aiken held an 11-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 shots on goal advantage. The Pacers had five corner kicks compared to 10 for the visitors.

At halftime, the senior men's soccer standouts were honored for their hard work and dedication.
