DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team saw its season come to a close with a 3-1 loss at No. 2 North Georgia in the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinal Tuesday evening.
The Pacers close the year with a 4-13 mark while the Nighthawks improve to 10-9.
It was not until the 8:32 mark that either team placed a shot on goal and it came from head coach
Ike Ofoje's squad.
Andre Simmond blasted an attempt, but it was stopped by the keeper. A minute later, USC Aiken earned a corner kick but the team was unable to register a shot off the set piece.
Orlando Maldovan was up for the challenge in the 17
th minute as he snuffed out a shot by the Nighthawks, keeping the contest scoreless. However, UNG would net a goal at the 29:47 mark and maintain the 1-0 advantage heading into the second stanza.
Maldovan stopped back-to-back shots within a four-second span just over a minute into the final period.
After Simmond's shot was blocked at the 51:13 mark, the Nighthawks countered with a goal in the 55
th minute.
Despite trailing 2-0, Ofoje's team would not give up. UNG was whistled for a foul in the box and with 60:19 on the clock, Simmond netted the ensuing penalty kick, slicing the deficit to 2-1.
USC Aiken was revitalized after the tally.
Jordan Misiri blasted a shot at the 60:35 mark, but it sailed wide of the frame.
The Nighthawks regained a two-goal lead with just under 14 minutes to play on a one-on-one.
The Pacers had a pair of corner kicks in the final 10 minutes, but neither resulted in a shot on goal. USC Aiken's last attempt came off the boot of
Thomas Jorgensen with 27 seconds to play, but it missed high.
