AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team lost a 4-0 contest to UNC Pembroke Wednesday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 4-13 overall and 2-9 against league foes. The Braves improve to 10-2-2 overall and 8-0-2 against conference competition.
Trailing 1-0 after a quick goal by the Braves,
Sarah Drury registered the first attempt by the home team, but she missed wide. In the eighth minute, Drury tried again but was blocked.
Abby Frick missed high in the 12
th minute before
Sarah Moore rocketed a shot on frame that was saved by Gina Ryan.
UNCP scored its second goal midway through the first half, but head coach
Hilary George's team continued to battle. Moore ripped a shot in the 36
th minute, but a great play by the keeper held the score at 2-0.
After the Braves tacked on a pair of late goals in the first half, USC Aiken played inspired ball over the final 45 minutes of action. The defense kept the visitors' high-scoring offense in check as both battled to a scoreless draw in the second stanza.
George switched keepers at the start of the second half and
Dakota Curtis was challenged quickly. However, she made a spectacular stop at the 58:52 mark, keeping the contest at 4-0. The Pacers countered quickly, but Drury's shot was saved.
In the 79
th minute of play,
Catherine McHale blasted a shot from 30 yards out, but it hit the crossbar. The attempt was the team's best opportunity to score in the contest, missing the back of the net by a couple of inches.
Curtis was up for another big stop at the 82:36 mark.
Karin Cadwalader and Curtis each played 45 minutes and both made a pair of saves.
For the match, George's team was out-shot 13-11, including an 8-6 margin in shots on goal. Each team had five corner kicks.
