AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team lost a 4-0 decision to Flagler Monday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 4-11 overall and 2-7 against conference competition. The Saints are 4-2-3 on the year and 3-1-2 against league foes.
In the second minute of play,
Karin Cadwalader turned away a point-blank shot to keep the contest scoreless. Although Flagler had a corner kick in the eighth minute, the defense held strong and did not allow a shot.
Sarah Drury took a dribble and booted a shot that sailed just over the crossbar at the 12:34 mark. The Saints managed to score on a ball inside the box at the 14:06 mark for what turned out to be the game-winning tally.
Despite trailing, the defense, led by
Abby Frick and
Amanda Giordano, played well. The back line turned away chance after chance. Additionally, Flagler was whistled for a pair of offside calls.
Frick blasted a shot toward the goal, but the Saints' keeper managed to corral it in the 22
nd minute of play.
The visitors added a second goal to the tally in the 37
th minute, but USC Aiken tried to quickly counter.
Sarah Moore split a pair of defenders before registering a shot on goal that was stopped by Racheal Cecil.
Monica Armendariz posted a shot on frame in the 44
th minute but was turned away.
After halftime, Cadwalader was up for the challenge, stopping a shot at the 47:15 mark. However, the Saints broke through for a pair of goals in the 50
th and 57
th minute of action.
Despite trailing, head coach
Hilary George's team continued to push hard.
Kali Phillips picked up a shot in the 74
th minute, but it narrowly missed the back of the net.
Catherine McHale's attempt at the 82:34 mark was saved, keeping the Pacers off the board.
For the match, USC Aiken was out-shot 9-7, including a 6-5 margin on goal. The Saints tallied eight corner kicks compared to four by the home squad. Cadwalader totaled two saves in the loss.
