Pacers Fall At Catawba

Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team put forth a solid effort on Sunday, but found itself on the losing end of a 2-0 match at Catawba.

The Pacers are now 0-2 on the young season.

First-year head coach Hilary George's squad went on the attack early and often, but was unable to find the back of the net. Thirty-five seconds into the match, USC Aiken earned a corner kick by Jenna Beauregard, but the team was not able to record a shot.

In the fifth minute of action, Akeyla Furbert rocketed a shot that the Indians' keeper managed to save. Four minutes later, Abby Frick blasted a deep shot that sailed high of the frame.

After a lengthy delay due to an injury, Beauregard launched a shot from 30 yards out that was high. Megan Smits had a pair of attempts and Hazel Kelley tallied one over the next few minutes, but none could score.

In the 17th minute of action, Karin Cadwalader stopped a break-away shot by Emily Davis, helping the Pacers maintain the shutout. Six minutes later, Heaven Tylee's attempt to get on the scoreboard was stopped by Angelica Pawlowski. Tori Caldwell had a shot on goal in the opening period, which ended without a score.

George's team continued applying pressure in the second half and Kelley registered a shot 43 seconds into the final stanza. However, it was high of the crossbar.

Cadwalader came up with a pair of big saves in the first 10 minutes of the half, but the Indians broke the tie in the 67th minute off a rebound for a 1-0 edge.

USC Aiken tried to find the equalizer, but the team was unable to convert on the offensive attack. The Indians tacked on a goal in the 86th minute for the 2-0 victory.

For the match, Cadwalader played all 90 minutes between the pipes. She stopped three shots.

The Pacers held a 19-13 edge in shots and maintained a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. It was a foul-plagued contest as the teams combined for 35 fouls.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday for their home opener against Lenoir-Rhyne. The match is part of the four-hour Pacer Fandemonium event. Proceeds from the contest will go to support Make-A-Wish.
