Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team lost a 3-1 decision at Pfeiffer in the season-opening match for both teams.
The Pacers are now 0-1 on the young season.
"The team battled hard and we were disappointed that the contest ended up being called in the 71st minute due to lightning," Head Coach Hillary George said.
"We got off to a slow start in the first half and Pfeiffer did a good job capitalizing on our mistakes. We had some really good opportunities on set pieces, but just couldn't find the back of the net."
George's team found itself trailing 3-0 before the offense broke through in the second period. Senior Megan Smits made a nifty move before flicking the ball to Hazel Kelley, who one-timed it into the back of the net at the 53:52 mark.
USC Aiken continued applying pressure in the half as Sarah Moore rocketed a shot just high of the frame while Jenna Beauregard's attempt in the 70th minute of action sailed wide of the goal.
The teams were forced to sit through a weather delay due to lighting in the 71st minute. The contest officially halted at the 71:35 mark.
For the match, the Pacers were out-shot 11-8. Both teams accounted for four corner kicks. USC Aiken tallied a pair of saves to one for the Falcons.
Between the pipes, Nicole Cranny started and played the first half. She registered two saves while Karin Cadwalader played the weather-shortened second half, notching one save.
Moore and Kelley led the squad with a pair of shots while Beauregard, Amanda Giordano, Casey Rish and Tori Caldwell each had one.
The Pacers return to action Sunday when they play at Catawba. The match is slated to start at 5 p.m. Live stats and video links are available at PacerSports.com.
