Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team lost a 5-0 decision to Columbus State Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 1-6 on the season, including a 1-2 mark against league foes.
The host Cougars got on the board in the 12th minute and tacked on their second score just a couple minutes later. However, head coach Hilary George's team quickly went on the offensive.
At the 15:48 mark, USC Aiken rattled off its first shot of the day as Akeyla Furbert booted the ball toward the target. However, it sailed just wide of the frame.
The Pacers' defense stepped up over the next few minutes, blocking a shot by the host school prior to Nicole Cranny registering one of her 10 saves on the day.
In the 22nd minute, George's squad earned a corner kick, but the team was unable to get a shot off. USC Aiken continued applying pressure, earning two more corner kicks within a 30-second span. Megan Smits managed to blast a shot toward the goal that missed high at the 24:41 mark.
After a score by Columbus State, Amanda Giordano countered with a shot that missed wide. George's team recorded its first shot on goal when Furbert rocketed an attempt that was thwarted by the Cougars' keeper. However, the team went into intermission trailing 4-0.
The home squad posted a quick goal in the second half, but the defense stood tall the rest of the way, turning away the home team.
Hazel Kelley had a pair of shots, including a header that was saved.
For the match, Columbus State held a 21-9 advantage in shots. Each team had six corner kicks. Cranny stopped 10 shots between the pipes while playing all 90 minutes.
