Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team posted a 3-2 double-overtime victory over visiting Georgia Southwestern Monday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 4-10-1 on the season, including 4-5 against league foes.
After a scoreless first half, Akeyla Furbert got things going as she dribbled down the right side of the pitch. She flicked the ball across the width of the goal to Megan Smits, who promptly one-timed it past the keeper for a 1-0 advantage in the 63rd minute of action. Furbert was credited with an assist.
The Hurricanes battled back, tying the contest six minutes later. The visitors took a 2-1 lead with just 3:32 left on the clock. However, the hard-working, attacking style of play allowed USC Aiken to knot the score at 2-2 in the 89th minute.
Heaven Tylee found Smits for her second score of the contest, forcing overtime.
Head coach Hilary George's team controlled the overtime session, but it was unable to net the game-winner. Smits had a shot blocked in the first overtime and Sarah Moore rocketed a shot that went high of the frame.
The Pacers had one last chance after earning a corner kick in the 99th minute, but the squad was unable to get a shot off.
USC Aiken went on the attack in the second overtime session. Forty-seven seconds in, Smits fired off a shot that was blocked. She attempted another shot at the 101:09 mark, but the keeper managed to pick up the save.
After a corner kick by Beauregard and another shot by Smits, George's team was able to win its second consecutive match after Furbert dribbled down the left side and shot a bending attempt to the right side of the target from 15 yards out for the game-winning goal.
For the match, USC Aiken posted 24 shots to seven by the Hurricanes. The Pacers tallied six corner kicks compared to a pair by the visitors.
Nicole Cranny played all 103:16 between the pipes and stopped three shots in the win.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they travel to UNC Pembroke. The match is slated to start at 5 p.m.
