Three-Run First and Kornegay Gem Leads Pacers to PBC Tournament Semifinals

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ga. – India Kornegay pitched a complete game three-hitter and the sixth-seeded University of South Carolina Aiken softball team bested third-seeded Augusta State, 3-0, in quarterfinal action at the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament at Cougar Field.

Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) concluded the complete game shutout striking out 10. The shutout victory allowed her to become the all-time leader in career shutouts in Pacer history with 16. She also now solely owns the school single-season record for shutouts with nine.

The sophomore standout moved to 20-11 on the season in the Pacer win. The 20th win is the most ever in a single season by a Pacer softball pitcher.

USC Aiken (26-16) opened the game strongly by rushing out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Pacers claimed all three of the runs with two outs already on the scoreboard.

Runners at first and second, Kayla Denham (Palatka, Fla./Daytona State College) netted the first two runs of the game for USC Aiken when she doubled in Victoria Burkett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS) and Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS).

Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS) then singled in Denham to leave the Pacers on top 3-0.

The third run of the game forced Augusta State (31-16) into a pitching change with starter Emily Headrick (16-6) leaving having just pitched two-thirds of an inning.

The three-run first would go on to prove to be more than enough for Kornegay and the Pacers.

USC Aiken finished its dominating win out-hitting Augusta State 10-3.

Kaitlyn White led the Pacers at the dish in the game, going a perfect 4-for-4. Jones was the only other Pacer with multiple hits in the contest with two.

No Jaguar was able to secure multiple hits in the game.

USC Aiken moves on the semifinal round of the PBC Softball Tournament with the win over their rival. The Pacers will face off against tournament second-seeded and national No. 11 North Georgia at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 22 in the semifinals.
