Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina
Aiken softball team swept a doubleheader from Peach Belt Conference
foe Georgia College on Sunday afternoon at the Peeler Complex.
The Pacers, who are now on a four-game winning streak, picked up
a thrilling 3-2 game one win over Georgia College (20-18, 7-7 PBC)
in 10 innings. USC Aiken is now 3-0 in extra-inning games in the
2012 season.
USC Aiken (17-9, 6-4 PBC) closed out its twinbill sweep with a
5-1 victory in the second game.
The Pacers scored the first two runs of the first game in the
top of the second inning.
Lindsey
Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS) commenced the
inning for USC Aiken by singling to left field. Hillary Stewart
(Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood HS) then reached on a Bobcat error to
give the Pacers runners at first and second.
After Kelley
King (Chesterfield, S.C./Chesterfield HS) advanced the duo over
to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, another Georgia College
error on a Brandy Bossle
(North East, Md./Rising Sun HS) at-bat allowed both Jones and
Stewart to score to garner the Pacers the 2-0 lead.
Georgia College was able to get one of the runs back in the
bottom of the fourth. The Bobcats would then tie the game at 2-2 in
the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra
innings.
Georgia College looked as if it would be able to claim the win
in the bottom of the eighth inning, loading the bases with just one
out. Undeterred, USC Aiken was able to get two more outs to keep
the game going.
In the top of the 10th inning, USC Aiken scored the
game-winning run when Kaitlyn White
(Columbia, S.C./College of Charleston) scored on Georgia College's
fourth error of the contest. White had reached base in the
10th with an infield single.
Jones led the Pacers in the first game, claiming four of the
five Pacers hits in the game by going a perfect 4-for-4.
India
Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) pitched all 10 innings in
the circle for USC Aiken in the game. Kornegay (14-7) struck out
nine.
Shahlisa Shirley and Mikayla Sparks paced Georgia College in its
game one loss with two hits each.
Sabrina Chandler (7-7) suffered the loss in the circle for
Georgia College. Chandler pitched all 10 innings, fanning just two
Pacers.
USC Aiken once again struck first in the second game in the top
of the third inning with Kayla Denham
(Palatka, Fla./Daytona State College) singling in Whitney Clary
(Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS), who had singled to get on base.
Georgia College evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the
fifth, but USC Aiken did not take long to take the lead back with
Jones scoring in the top of the sixth to give the Pacers a 2-1
advantage.
Jones had opened the inning by doubling. She was brought home
shortly thereafter by a Nicole Borden
(Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) single to left field.
USC Aiken would go on to add three insurance runs in the top of
the seventh en route to its four-run win.
The Pacers out-hit Georgia College, 8-5, in its second game
win.
Three Pacers finished with multiple hits in game two with White,
Clary and Borden all collecting two hits in the Pacer win.
Whitney Okvist was the only Bobcat with multiple hits in game
two. She had two hits in the Bobcat loss.
Samantha
Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern HS) picked up the win in the circle
for USC Aiken in game two. Lemm (3-2) struck out one in her
complete-game win.
Haley Burnett took the loss for Georgia College in game two.
Burnett (6-6) allowed five hits and two runs in her five innings in
the circle.
USC Aiken will next travel to Pembroke, N.C. to face off against
UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, Mar. 28. The first game of the Peach
Belt Conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
