Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. - The roles appeared reversed Saturday afternoon as the apparent underdog looked like the more dominant team as the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team claimed two dominating wins over the 20th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers (25-18, 8-13 PBC) shut out the Pirates (28-12, 11-7 PBC) 4-0 in the first game of the afternoon before commandeering a dominating 10-4 win in the rubber game of the series.
Stephen Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden) continued his stellar performance in the series as he finished the day 5-for-7 between the two games including a home run in the second game. The junior shortstop had three runs on the day and one RBI to finish the series with the Pirates batting an outstanding .818 (9-11) while batting through the cycle over the two-day series.
In total, the Pacers out-hit the Pirates 21-11 on the day to out-score Armstrong Atlantic a combined 14-4.
The Pacers started off the day strong with a 4-0 win in the first game off two single-run innings that were followed up by two runs crossing in the seventh to seal the win and set up the rubber game.
JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) ripped a two-run home run in the seventh inning of the first game to add the final two insurance runs.
In the second game of the day, USC Aiken took charge with a slight 1-0 advantage in the first inning and never looked back.
After Armstrong tied the game at one all in the third inning, the Pacers broke the tie with a single run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
With the wind at their backs, the Pacers would mount a furious charge in the sixth and seventh innings that would see eight runs score with five Pacers finding the dish in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
The Pirates attempted to find some form of offense late in the game when Drew Walker blasted a three-run home run over the right field wall in the ninth inning, but USC Aiken closer Jason Cochcroft and the Pacers would not allow the Pirates to draw any closer, holding on for the six-run, 10-4 victory.
Thomas McLeod (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) pitched a complete game in game-one for head coach Kenny Thomas and the Pacers to improve to 7-4 for the year. McLeod offered up a stellar pitching performance as he fanned eight batters and gave up just one walk and five hits.
Derek Beasley (Harlem, Ga./Harlem) secured the win in the second game for USC Aiken to improve to 5-3 after pitching five innings and striking out four batters while Cochcroft (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert) secured his second save of the season in four innings of work.
Trent Landa (3-4) suffered the loss in game-one for Joe Roberts and the Pirates while Scott Strickland (6-2) took the loss in the second game.
USC Aiken will now take a few days off before finishing up the 2011 Outback Cup with rival Augusta State in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 20 at the 'Bert. The Pacers and Jaguars are slated to renew their rivalry with a 6:30 p.m. single game after the Pacers claimed the first half of this year's Cup with an impressive 6-0 win.
