Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team came into its first non-conference road game of the 2011 season hunting for a strong offensive showing and the Pacers accomplished just that in a 15-0 mauling of the Newberry Wolves at the Smith Road Complex
USC Aiken (16-11) has now beaten Newberry (14-16) twice in the 2011 season as they also bested the Wolves, 12-5, at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on Feb. 16.
The Pacers opened their dominating victory on Tuesday by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.
The score would remain 4-0 until the top of the fourth with the Pacers placing three runs on the scoreboard to take a 7-0 advantage.
The Pacers would meet their current lead and add one in the next inning as they posted eight runs in the top of the fifth.
After two runs had already been plated in the inning, Josh Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) acquired three of the eight runs for the Pacers in the inning when he doubled in Teddy Leverett (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell), Stephen Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla./Lake Sumter CC) and Josh Attaway (Lexington, S.C./Lexington).
After Miller scored when Tyler Bourdo (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Attaway would then net the final two of the eight runs of the inning by singling in Kyle Rice (Augusta, Ga./Cross Creek) and Stephen Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden).
Neither team would score in the final four innings, leaving USC Aiken with the 15-run shutout victory.
Newberry's Chris Phillips (0-2) suffered the loss on the hill. He pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs.
USC Aiken's Jason Cochcroft (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert) pitched the first five innings of the resounding Pacer victory to claim the win on the mound. Cochcroft (3-1) struck out five and allowed just two hits.
In total, five Pacer pitchers combined to allow just four hits to the Wolves. In turn, the scorching Pacer offense devoured on five Newberry pitchers to the tune of 14 hits.
Leverett, Bourdo, Attaway and Jeffrey Campbell (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) led the Pacers at the dish with each collecting two hits.
Derek Bley was the only Newberry player to record multiple hits with the Wolves' outfielder obtaining two of Newberry's four hits.
USC Aiken will remain on the road next to close the week as they will play a three-game Peach Belt Conference set at current national No. 5 Georgia College.
The series will begin in Milledgeville, Ga. on Saturday, March 26 with a doubleheader. The twinbill is set to commence at 2 p.m. with the second game to follow shortly after the conclusion of game one.
The three-game league set will conclude with a single 1 p.m. game on Sunday, March 27.
