Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – After three starts without registering a decision, Jason Cochcroft notched his first win on the mound of the 2011 season as the 21st-ranked University of South Aiken baseball team continued to roll past the visiting Fighting Tigers of Salem International 15-4 at Roberto Hernandez Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers (10-2) secured the victory off 16 hits while the Fighting Tigers (0-8) only managed nine hits in the contest.
The game began with Salem International securing two runs in the first inning, but that would be the last lead they would enjoy as USC Aiken registered nine unanswered runs from the first through the fourth inning.
With USC Aiken up 4-2 heading into the fourth inning Stephen Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden) stole three bases, including home plate, as five Pacers crossed the plate to improve the score to 9-4 in USC Aiken's favor.
The Tigers showed a sign of life in the top of the fifth inning when Irving de la Concha ripped a two-run tater to pull Salem International within five, but that would be the closest they would get as USC Aiken scored at least one run in every inning of the game, including three in the seventh to register the final 15 runs.
10 Pacers scored in the game, with four crossing the dish at least twice as JJ Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) scored three times, including a home run in the third inning, to lead the scoring drive. Jeffery Campbell (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg-Methodist) and Spencer Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) each recorded three RBIs in the contest.
Tyler Bourdo (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell) and Josh Attaway (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) led the Pacers' efforts at the plate as Bourdo went 2-or-3 with two runs scored and Attaway was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and one run scored.
Cochcroft (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert) pitched five innings and is now 1-0 while Elliot Swiatly suffered the loss for Salem International after just two and two thirds innings on the hill to fall to 0-2.
USC Aiken and Salem International will wrap up their inaugural meeting with one final 1 p.m. game tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 27 at the 'Bert.
