Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – Nine different Pacers scored and 10 registered at least one hit as the No. 27 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered an impressive 12-5 victory over the Wolves of South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry College at Roberto Hernandez Stadium Wednesday evening.
The thrashing improves the nationally-ranked Pacers to 5-2 on the young campaign while Newberry falls below .500 on the season at 4-5.
With the score knotted at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Peach Belt Conference's Player and Freshman of the Week teamed up to give USC Aiken a 2-1 lead. Stephen Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden), the Peach Belt Conference's Player of the Week crossed the plate off Spencer Wolfe's, the PBC Freshman of the Week, single through the left side.
The Pacers would tack on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore catcher Josh Miller (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) ripped a double down the leftfield foul line to score Teddy Leverett (Evans, Ga./Truett-McConnell).
The bottom of the fifth inning would see three more Pacers cross the plate to score as USC Aiken went up 6-1. Wolfe (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), Tim Taylor (Columbia, S.C./USC Sumter) and Jowan Gray (Aiken, S.C./South Aiken) all scored in the inning as the Pacers posted three runs off three hits and a Newberry error.
Gray and Tyler Bourdo added two more runs to the Pacers' tally in the bottom of the seventh inning putting USC Aiken up 8-1.
Newberry would score a pair of runs in the eighth, but it would all be for naught as Wolfe answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run just over the left field wall to also score J.J. Loker (Elkton, Va./Spotswood).
Gray and Matt Key (New Ellenton, S.C./Silver Bluff) would also score in the inning for USC Aiken off a single up the middle by Dylan Durham (Trenton, S.C./Strom Thurmond) to give USC Aiken a 12-3 lead with only one out registered by Newberry.
Hunter Cox knocked a two-run tater in the top of the ninth inning to pull Newberry back within seven, but the Wolves would not be able close any closer, settling for the 12-5 defeat.
Six different Pacers registered an RBI in the contest and USC Aiken doubled up Newberry's hit count, registering 16 total hits as a team with Wolfe leading the Pacer charge going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Gray was not too far behind as he went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Senior hurler Steven Spire (Swansea, S.C./Swansea) recorded his second win of the season on the hill for USC Aiken, pitching six solid innings while striking out five batters and giving up just two hits and one run to improve to 2-0 for the season.
Mario Rojas suffered the loss on the mound for the Wolves striking out just one batter en route to falling to 1-1 for the 2011 season.
USC Aiken will remain within the friendly confines of Roberto Hernandez Stadium this weekend as they welcome the Raiders of Shippensburg University for a three-game series that gets underway on Friday, Feb. 18 with a 4 p.m. afternoon game. The Pacers and Raiders will end their 2011 series with a pair of 1 p.m. games on Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20.
