AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team acquired its first Peach Belt Conference sweep of the year with a 3-0 victory over league rival Lander on Friday evening at the Convocation Center.
The win snapped a season-high four-match losing streak for the Pacers. USC Aiken ends its week with an 11-8 record overall. The victory over the Bearcats improved the Pacers to 3-4 in the PBC. Lander is now 12-5 on the season, including 4-3 in the PBC.
The Pacer defense was the story of the match with Lander hitting in the negatives in all three of the games.
The Pacers opened the match by taking a 25-21 victory in game one. They followed up their efforts in the second match with a nail-biting 25-23 victory in the second game. USC Aiken had to erase a late five-point deficit in the second game to obtain the two-point game two win.
The Pacers earned an easy 25-11 win in the third and final game with the Pacer defense holding Lander to a team hitting percentage of -.194 in the third game.
No player on either team was able to record double-digit kills in the match with USC Aiken's Shannon Byers (Morristown, Minn./Faribault) leading all players in the match with eight kills. She also had 14 digs.
Lauren Cedeno (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) only needed to provide 12 assists in the match for USC Aiken to emerge victorious. She also chipped in with 14 digs.
Pacer libero Samantha Lukralle (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led all Pacers in digs with 16.
Lander's Chelsey Corgan finished the match with a match-high 17 digs. The Bearcats' Lindsey Everhart was just behind Byers for the match lead with seven kills.
The Pacers as a team ended the three-game win over Lander with eight blocks. Lindsay Mortenson (Aliso Viejo, Cali./Santa Margartia Catholic) led all Pacers with four total blocks.
The Pacers now have some much-needed time off before welcoming new PBC rival Montevallo to the Convocation Center for a match on Thursday, Oct. 8. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.Â
