Balanced Attack Makes Quick Work Of FSU

Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--The USC Aiken Lady Pacers (6-1) got solid contributions from a number of players in blanking Fayetteville State (0-4) 3-0 in the first match of Saturday's morning session of the 2004 USC Aiken Volleyball Tournament. Game scores were 30-14, 30-15, and 30-20. 

Senior Jenny Lloyd tallied 16 kills, one of four Lady Pacers in double figures. Freshmen Veronica Seidle and Missy Deardorff along with sophomore Laura Williams each added 10 kills. Seidle posted double figures in digs as well with a match-high 10 while Williams hit a match-best .562. Lloyd added five service aces and nine digs in totaling 21.0 points. 

As a team, the Lady Pacers registered a season-high 14 service aces and hit .375 for the match. Fayetteville State managed only a .024 hitting percentage and one ace. 

Jennifer Eckman and Shinicka Spears each had five kills to pace the Lady Broncos. Eckman chipped in a team-best eight digs while Tammy McFadden recorded three blocks. 

Leading 12-8 in game one, the Lady Pacers took command with a 13-1 run to surge ahead 24-9 keyed by five kills from Williams and three kills and a pair of aces by Lloyd. Seidle and Deardorff then registered two kills each as USCA won 30-14. 

In game two, Fayetteville State again kept it competitive through the early stages until another decisive Lady Pacer run. This time it came with the score 15-10 and was of the 7-0 variety. Deardorff provided the firepower with three kills, but all the points, including a pair of aces, came on the serve of sophomore Brandy Johnson. She finished with three aces, tying senior Jessica Lane's match total for second behind Lloyd's. Leading 22-11, USCA closed out game two 30-15. 

After an early 2-0 lead by FSU, the Lady Pacers regained control but were not able to break open a significant mid-game run. Leading 21-19, a Williams' kill ignited a 9-1 run to close the match with a 30-20 USCA win. Williams had four kills during the span. 

USC Aiken will play in the final match of the tournament at 5:30 PM in a rare non-conference showdown with archrival Augusta State University. ASU takes on Eckerd College at 12:30 PM followed by Fayetteville State and Eckerd at 3:00 PM.
