Seniors Give Pacers 30-Win Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--Playing in their last game ever as Pacers, USC Aiken's seniors gave the school its fourth straight 30-win season by leading the team to a come from behind win over Armstrong Atlantic State University in the second game of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader tonight at Roberto Hernandez Stadium in Aiken, S.C. The Pirates (29-27, 10-20 PBC) won game one by a 16-6 score and USCA (30-26, 12-18 PBC) took game two, 6-5.

Bradley Key recorded doubles in the first and last innings of game two to give the junior from Evans, Ga., 24 two-base hits on the season, breaking the mark of 23 set by Dave Hieb in 1992.

USC Aiken entered the last inning of the second game trailing the Pirates 5-4. With one out, senior Ashley Farr singled up the middle to put the tying run on base. Key followed with his record breaking double, through the left side, and Farr sprinted from first to home to tie the game.

Key was able to advance to third on a throwing error. AASU skipper Joe Roberts elected to intentionally walk the next two batters, and brought in an outfielder as an extra infielder, to set up the force play at home plate.
Senior Mike Cunningham followed with a game-winning base hit over the top of the third baseman's out-reached glove to plate Key.

Farr finished the game with two hits in four at bats and two runs scored. Key went three-for-four with a two RBIs and scored the game winner. Cunningham's lone hit in four at bats proved to be the most important.

Senior Tony Hanks set up the seventh inning comeback when he scored off of a Robert Davis single in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the AASU lead to 5-4. Hanks went three-for-four with three runs scored while Davis finished with a pair of RBIs and two hits in three at bats.

Armstrong Atlantic's Kyle Maddux hit a two-run home run in the second inning to put the Pirates out in front 2-1. AASU added two more in the third on an RBI double by George Fletcher and a run scoring single off the bat of Brandon McKinnon.

Fletcher added a solo homer in the fifth inning, his fourth dinger of the day. He finished the day with five hits in nine at bats, six runs scored and seven RBIs.

Nick Wandless (5-1) earned the win by pitching two and a third innings of scoreless relief. Leon Boyd (5-6) suffered the loss after giving up two runs on three hits in two innings of work.

In game one, the two teams combined for nine runs in the first inning. Armstrong Atlantic State took advantage of three Pacer errors to jump out to a 5-0 lead. USC Aiken answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The first five USCA batters reached base. Back-to-back doubles by Hanks and Farr platted the first Pacer run. Key followed with an RBI single and Davis drove in Key with his second triple of the season. Daniel Quartararo followed Davis with a walk but did not score.

The Pirates added two runs each in the second and third innings to take control of the game. Fletcher's two-run home run accounted for the scoring in the second inning. Fletcher would go on to hit two more round trippers. He hit another two-run shot in the seventh and a solo bomb in the ninth. The senior finished three-for-six with four runs scored and five driven in.

Armstrong Atlantic State pounded out 17 hits. All nine of the batters in the Pirate line up recorded at least one hit. Seven of the nine had two or more hits.

On senior night, Hanks hit his first home run of the season in the bottom half of the eighth inning. The senior from Lexington, S.C., finished with three hits in five at bats, three runs and one RBI. Hanks, along with fellow seniors Farr, Cunningham, Chad McMurray and Wes McColl, were honored before the game.

Farr went four-for-five in game one with a run scored and two RBIs. Michael Pelley had two hits in six at bats for Armstrong Atlantic State to go along with two runs scored and three RBIs.

The first game of Saturday's doubleheader was delayed by lightning for 40 minutes in the bottom of the third inning.

With its season now complete, the 2004 Pacer squad extends the school's streak of 30-win seasons, which began in 2001. That team posted a 30-25 mark, the 2002 team went 37-19 and the 2003 Pacers finished 30-24.
