Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC--USC Aiken (28-24) used opposite ends of the spectrum to claim a sweep in Tuesday's day/night non-conference baseball doubleheader with West Virginia Tech (21-25) at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers took game one 7-6 with a walk-off RBI double by
Justin Williams. USCA routed the Golden Bears 15-0 in the nightcap. The Pacers improve to 9-0 all-time versus West Virginia Tech.
In game one, the Golden Bears jumped out to an early lead in the second inning as four hits and two Pacer errors led to three runs. Mike Coleman and John Sullivan each had RBI singles in the inning.
USC Aiken countered with one in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by Williams.
Bradley Key smacked his 21st double of the season in the third inning while
Robert Davis followed Key with a double to left field to plate Key and reduce the advantage to one at 3-2.
Jack Daniels led off the fourth with a double to right center and then Brett Hodgdon followed with a homer over the left field wall to make it 5-2 Golden Bears.
Hodgdon went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three run scored in the game. Coleman was 1-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.
After West Virginia Tech tacked one more on in the sixth, the Pacers found themselves in a 6-2 hole entering the bottom of the eighth. With one out and two on, Williams singled to center field to load the bases for
Tony Hanks. In a pinch hitting role, the senior from Lexington, S.C. smacked one down the left field line scoring two as the Pacers pulled within two at 6-4.
Daniel Quartararo singled to right field cutting the margin to one while
Ashley Farr's base knock through the left side brought around
Ian Kowalchuk to knot the game at 6-6.
After
Peden Rucker sat the Golden Bears down in order in the ninth,
Bob Hatcher led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field.
Mike Cunningham's sacrifice bunt moved Hatcher into scoring position with one out for Williams. The junior from Barnwell, S.C. ripped a shot off the wall in right field, scoring Hatcher with the game winner.
Jerod Summer went 5.0 innings allowing six runs, two earned, on nine hits and two walks, striking out four in the no decision.
Paul Ferrell recorded outs in the only two batters he faced in the sixth while Rucker (4-2) surrendered just one hit, not allowing a run or a walk, fanning four in 3.1 innings in the win.
Eric Hunt held the Pacers' offense in check until the eighth inning. In 8.0 innings of work, he let up six earned runs on 10 hits and five walks, striking out seven. Doug Brown surrendered the game-winning run on two hits in the loss.
Williams, Quartararo, and Davis each had two hits for the Pacers and combined to drive in four runs.
In the nightcap, three Pacer pitchers led by starter
Steve Dunham held the Golden Bears scoreless and allowed just four hits in the 15-0 win. Dunham (3-9) let up four hits in 7.0 innings, striking out seven and walking three in the win.
Lee Cromer faced four batters, striking out the side in the eighth while
Trey Williams tossed a one, two, three ninth.
Hanks singled to left field with two outs and the bases loaded in the second to push USCA ahead 2-0.
Brandon Barenie and Hatcher added a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the third to increase the margin to 4-0. Barenie singled up the middle in the fourth to plate two more and make it 6-0.
Still leading 6-0 entering the seventh, USCA exploded for nine runs on five hits to put the game out of reach 15-0. Kowalchuk and Farr each had two RBI doubles,
Derek Gordon added a two RBI single to center field, and Hatcher (3) crushed a three-run blast over the right center field wall to cap the action.
Hatcher led the Pacers going 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Barenie was 2-for-2 with three RBI, three runs scored, and three walks. Farr, Key, and Williams each pounded out two hits while Hanks and Kowalchuk each had a pair of RBI.
Marty Wiesler was chased after 3.2 innings surrendering six runs, four earned, on seven hits and four walks, fanning five in the loss.
Charles LaRochelle led West Virginia Tech with a 2-for-3 evening.
USC Aiken will now have 10 days before they host Peach Belt Conference foe Armstrong Atlantic State in a three-game series starting Friday, May 7 at 7:30 PM.
