Blue Hose Silence Bats

Box Score AIKEN, SC--Presbyterian College (16-21) limited the potent USC Aiken offense (21-18) to just five hits on Wednesday night in handing the Pacers a 10-7 defeat in non-conference baseball action at J.H. Satcher Field.  The five hits ties the team's season low set in a 6-2 loss to #21 Francis Marion (Feb. 28) and a 7-5 defeat by #13 Georgia College & State University (Feb. 15).  The Blue Hose swept the two-game season series.

PC opened up strong in the first inning with a two runs on an RBI double by Kevin White and an RBI single by Matt Warren.  White finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored while Warren was a triple shy of the cycle going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored.

Clint Keown drew a lead off walk in the Pacers' first at bat and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Williams to trim to deficit to 2-1.

With the same score in the third inning, shortstop Tony Hanks provided the Pacers with their only real offense of the game.  The 5-11 junior from Lexington, SC, crushed a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center for a grand slam to make it 5-2 Pacers.  It was the ninth home run of the season for Hanks.

Demetrick Drumming singled home Keown in the bottom of the fourth, matching a Blue Hose run plated in the top of the inning to keep the margin at three, 6-3.

PC got two more back in the sixth on a Warren two-run homer to left center to draw the Blue Hose within one, 6-5.  But it was White with the big blast in the seventh that really proved to be the difference.  With two on and one out, White (8) hit a three-run shot to left center to put Presbyterian back on top 8-6.

After tacking on two more insurance runs in the eighth, USC Aiken had the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but could only push across one run in the form of Ashley Farr.

Wes McColl tossed 6.0 innings of work scattering seven hits and two walks, striking out three, allowing five runs, four earned, in the no decision.  Paul Ferrell (3-2) lasted just 0.2 of an inning in relief giving up three earned runs on two hits and one walk in the loss for the Pacers.  Mike Pomaville surrendered two unearned runs on two hits while Nick Wandless worked a perfect 1.1 innings to close out the game, striking out three of the four batters he faced.

It was the opposite story for the PC pitching staff.  Starter Zachary Matthews struggled through 3.1 innings allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits and six walks in the no decision.  But the bullpen for the Blue Hose was nearly untouchable.  Richard Barkley pitched 2.2 innings of hitless baseball, allowing just one base runner in the form of a walk, and struck out three.  Davis Rice (4-2) came on to toss the final 3.0 innings, holding the Pacers to one earned run on one hit and one walk, striking out four in the win.

USC Aiken will host archrival Augusta State in a three-game Peach Belt Conference series this weekend.  The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5 starting at 1:00 PM followed by a single game on Sunday, April 6 at 2:00 PM.  The Pacers hold a commanding 35-10 lead in 45 all-time meetings in the series including sweeps each of the past two seasons.
