Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken shot just 30.8 percent in the first half and fell behind early to Kennesaw State University on their way to an 81-57 loss tonight at "The Courthouse" in Aiken, S.C. Bobby Brown scored 21 first half points for the Owls, who shot 61.5 percent in the first half, as they built a 17-point halftime lead. The Pacers fall to 2-14 on the season and 1-7 in the Peach Belt Conference. Kennesaw meanwhile, improved to 15-4 and 7-1 in the PBC.
USC Aiken is in the midst of an eight game losing streak, the longest in school history.
"The only way I know to get out of it is to stay positive and keep coaching these players," said Pacer Head Coach
Mike Roberts. "We have to keep working hard despite the adversity."
Blake Coty staked the Owls to a 3-0 lead right out of the gate. His three-pointer 29 seconds into the game put Kennesaw State out ahead for good, as KSU never trailed through the entire contest.
Minda Statkus (Mazeikai, Lithuania) got the Pacers on the board with a lay-up at the 18:22 mark. USCA would score just two more points over the next six minutes.
Tommy Thompson's lay-up, with 12:43 left in the first, capped a 19-4 run for Kennesaw State to start the game. Brown had eight of the first 14 KSU points. The junior scored 10 of the next 12 Kennesaw points as the Owls built their largest first half lead, 20 points, 31-11, with 7:44 to go before intermission. Brown hit eight-of-nine shots in the first half and five-of-seven free throw attempts for 21 points.
"Bobby Brown was superb, he played very well tonight," said
Roberts. "He was the best player on the court."
Brown finished the night with 28 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the field and five-of-eight shooting at the free throw line. He also pulled down five boards, dished out three assists, blocked two shots and had four steals.
After falling behind by 20 points, the Pacers put together an 11-1 run to cut the deficit to 10 points, 32-22, with 2:57 left remaining in the first half.
Lee Burton (Clearwater, Fla.) had seven of the 11 USCA points during the run. He finished the night with a team-high 12 points, four assists and a team best five rebounds.
Just as quickly as the Pacers cut the lead, the Owls answered. KSU closed out the final 2:39 with a 9-2 run to take a 17-point lead, 41-24, into the locker room. Brandon Moore scored seven of his of nine points during the Owl run.
USC Aiken would get no closer in the second half, as KSU moved out to nearly a 30-point lead to start the final stanza.
For the game, the Pacers connected on only 18 of their 47 shot attempts for 38.3 percent. Kennesaw State hit 30-of-54 shots for 55.6 percent. The Owls out-rebounded USCA, 33-27, and forced 21 USC Aiken turnovers.
Taurus Watson (Batesburg, S.C.) finished the night with 10 points, on 8-of-9 shooting from the foul line. Reggie McCoy and Blake Coty scored in double figures for the Owls with 11 points each.
Next up for the Pacers is a trip to PBC leading Columbus State. The Cougars will host USC Aiken on Saturday in Columbus, Ga. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
