Box Score AIKEN, SC--The USC Aiken Pacers (13-7) continued to swing the bats well this evening, as they posted a 28-8 victory over Southern Indiana (4-8) at J.H. Satcher Field. USCA sweeps the series with the Screaming Eagles. On Tuesday, the Pacers posted an 8-4 victory over USI.
There were lots of offensive fire works by both teams in this contest. A combined 28 runs were scored on 24 hits and a total of three errors. USCA cut down the number of errors in this game from the last time these two teams met. The Pacers committed seven miscues on Tuesday.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Adam Schiff hit a RBI single to center field off Pacer hurler
Harold Sofield. Pacer head coach
Kenny Thomas pulled Sofield after only two-thirds of an inning. Reliever,
Chad McMurray came in relief.
USCA responded to the run in the first with a five run output in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles by
Tavis Cummings, scoring three runs and
Demetrick Drumming, scoring one RBI.
Bradley Key hit the first home run of the game off Eagle pitcher
Bowie Johnson, who also didn't make it out of the first inning, only going a third of an inning, allowing five runs, all earned on three hits and two walks. After the first inning, USCA had a 5-1 lead.
After a scoreless second inning for each team, the Pacers tacked on eight more runs in the third inning as they batted-around for six hits. A three-run home run by
Tony Hanks put the Pacers up 8-1. After another pitching change by the Eagles,
Cummings belted his second grand slam of the season on the very first pitch by
Matt Keener. The very next batter,
Drumming, belted his longball for the day on back-to-back shots.
Leading 13-1 the Pacers seemed to be in control of this ballgame. However, Southern Indiana had back-to-back innings in which it scored three or more runs to eventually cut the deficit to five runs.
In the fifth inning,
McMurray started to show signs of fatigue as
Lee Cromer came into the contest in relief.
McMurray went three-and-two-thirds, allowing two hits, three runs, all earned, two walks and three strikeouts. The Eagles batted-around in both the fifth and sixth innings, scoring a combined seven runs.
The Eagles scored four more times in the sixth the cut the deficit to 13-8. However, the Pacers added three more runs in the seventh on a home run by
Ashley Morgan on the first pitch of the inning and a two-run double by
Ashley Farr down the right field line.
???????USCA followed up its three run output in the seventh inning with a four run inning in the eighth.
Hanks hit his second home run of the game leading off the eighth. The other three runs came off singles and
Thomas unloaded his bench in the 20-8 win.
For the game,
Cummings was 2-for-3 with seven RBI's, tying the school record for RBI's in a game with
Antonio Evans who had seven against Presbyterian on April 2, 1998.
Hanks went 3-for-5 and four RBI with two home runs.
Andy Mitchell (1-0) gets the win, working one inning, allowing three hits, four runs, all earned, two walks and two strikeouts.
The Pacers continue this homestand with a three-game series with Lincoln Memorial, beginning tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Pacer Park.
