Pacers Race Past Trojans

Box Score AIKEN, SC--Justin Williams' grand slam in the seventh inning pushed the Pacers over the top as USC Aiken (23-13) defeated Taylor University (3-6) 27-8 in non-conference baseball Thursday night setting a new school record for runs scored in a single game.  The Pacers bettered the 1997 mark set against Voorhees College in a 26-3 rout.  With the win, USCA extended their current winning streak to four games.

After scoring three in the first inning, the Pacers found themselves tied with the Trojans at 3-3 after one and a half.  But four in the second and eight more in the fourth broke the game open as USCA took a commanding 15-5 lead.  The Pacers added seven more in the fifth and then five in the seventh.

Ashley Morgan was 2-for-5 with one RBI but set a new school record scoring five runs.  Tavis Cummings was 2-for-3 with six RBI.  Freshman Bradley Key was a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, five RBI, and two runs scored.  As a team, USCA totaled five doubles and along
with Key and WilliamsDemetrick Drumming and Tony Hanks belted homers.

Andy Mitchell got the start for the Pacers working 4.0 innings allowing five runs, but just one earned, on four hits while striking out two in the no decision.  Chad McMurray (3-1) came on to work 2.0 innings of relief surrendering two earned runs on four hits to pick up the win.  Matt Ockuly and Steve Cunningham combined to hold Taylor to one unearned run over the final 3.0 innings.

Josh Cooper led the Trojans attack with three hits, one double, and three runs scored.  Ryan Zeeb also tallied two hits including a double while scoring a run.

On the mound, starter Chris Beebe (0-1) lasted just 2.0 innings giving up seven earned runs on seven hits and one walk in the loss.  As a staff, six Trojans pitchers combined to hit nine Pacers at the plate.  The nine HBP is a new Peach Belt Conference record for USCA.

USC Aiken continues its eight-game homestand on Friday at 6:00 PM when they host Armstrong Atlantic State University at J.H. Satcher Field.  On Saturday, the two teams will play a PBC doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
