Box Score JACKSONVILLE, FL--After blowing an eighth inning lead against Limestone last night, the Pacers (2-1) looked to redeem them against Presbyterian College (0-3) on the final day of the Peach Belt Challenge, hosted by #1 North Florida in Jacksonville. Redeeming is exactly what USCA did, but it came the same way as it lost last night with late inning run production.
The Pacers led off the game with a run-scoring single by
Ashley Farr, after a single by freshman
Micheal Snelgrove. That was the only run the Pacers could get in the opening inning.
Presbyterian came to the plate and scored five times in the opening inning, sparked by a two out three run home run by
Kevin White, putting the Blue Hose up 3-1. Following the home run, two more singles and a two run double down the left field line by
James Gritter gave Presbyterian a 5-1 lead just one inning into the game.
After the strong start by the Blue Hose, USCA didn't fold, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning on a double by
Ashley Morgan, which he then scored on the first of five errors by the Blue Hose. The final run of the inning came on a throwing error by Presbyterian, scoring
Leroy Walker, who reached base on the first error.
The Blue Hose followed up their five run inning with a four run inning in the second as Pacer hurler
Jason Nuzny didn't make it through the inning, allowing seven runs, all earned, on seven hits and two walks. Senior
Mitch Herne came into stop the bleeding and allowed the last two runs of the inning, but things began to change as Prebyterian was unable to get another run across the rest of the game.
Down 9-4 with only four innings remaining, the Pacers had to find a way to get back into the ball game. That is exactly what they did, scoring three times in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 9-7. Presbyterian brought in reliever
Matt Boone, for starter
Mark Dudley, who allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits, two walks and two strike outs in his five innings of work.
The Pacers were able to jump right on the new pitcher on a single by
Morgan, followed by a wild pitch and freshman
Casey Calhoun was hit by the
Boone offering. A single by Walker down the right field line loaded the bases for USCA. A single by freshman
Bradley Key and an error by the left fielder scored all three runs to get USCA right back into the contest, trailing 9-7.
USCA tied the contest in the eighth inning on a two run single by
Demetrick Drumming. In the bottom of the inning, the Blue Hose were only able to get one hit sending the game to the ninth tied.
???????USCA scored the final run of the game in the ninth on the fifth error of the day by the Blue Hose that proved to be costly.
Tony Hanks reached on the error and then scored on a single by
Walker, as
Hanks beat the throw to the plate.
Presbyterian had one last chance to tie the game in the last half of the ninth. The Pacers brought in their closer, freshman
Bradley Key to end the game. The Blue Hose loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a hit batter. A pinch-hit fielder's choice saved the Pacers as
Jon Marefat reached on the fielder's choice, but a great throw by
Morgan to the plate ended the threat as
Keagan Broussard was out at the plate.
???????The Pacers return home to face Carson-Newman in a three game set next weekend. The first game is on Friday, Feb. 8 at 6:00 p.m.
