Box Score KENNESAW, GA.--USC Aiken lost to Kennesaw State tonight, 67-50, in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball match-up, in Kennesaw, Ga.
Lee Burton led the Pacers (1-6, 1-2 PBC) with a game-high 15 points. The Owls used a 21-2 run in the first half to jump out to a 13-point lead.
A lay-up by
Bryant Latimer 28 seconds into the game started the scoring and put the Pacers out in front 2-0. A bucket and a free throw by Terrence Hill gave the Owls a 3-2 lead with 18:37 remaining. The Pacers answered with a two-pointer from
Minda Statkus followed by a basket by
Burton and a free throw by
Todd Williams.
Taurus Watson's lay-up capped a 7-0 run by USC Aiken and gave the Pacers a 9-3 lead with 15:24 left in the first half.
Burton finished the night shooting 7-for-15 from the field, 0-for-3 from behind the three-point arch and 2-for-2 from the foul line for 15 points. The junior also grabbed five rebounds, dished out one assist and had one block.
A tip in by
Jamall Gray would account for the only Pacer points over the next nine minutes as the Owls went on a 21-2 run to take a 24-11 lead with 6:34 to go in the first. Tommy Thompson had seven of the 21 Kennesaw points. He finished the night with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, a steal and one block.
USCA countered with a 7-0 run, finished off by a three-point basket by
Latimer, to cut the Owl lead to six points with 5:54 to go.
Latimer contributed 14 points on the night for the Pacers. He hit on five of his 12 shots from the field, including both of his three-point attempts. He also pulled down four rebounds and had one steal.
Bobby Bienaimee's tip in with 30 seconds left in the first half gave Kennesaw State their second 13-point lead of the night and set the halftime score at 35-22.
The Owls extended their lead to 16 points early in the second half on a basket and a free throw by Bobby Brown. Brown chipped in 12 points for KSU in the game,
nine of which came in the second half. A dunk by
Statkus got the deficit back to 13 points, 40-27, but the Pacers would get no closer the remainder of the game. Blake Coty's lay-up with 14:25 left in the game began a 14-2 run for the Owls that gave Kennesaw their largest lead of the game, 27 points, with 6:52 remaining.
The Pacers closed out the game with a 15-5 run that cut the final margin to 17 points, 67-50.
USCA finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (20-for-45) from the field, 25 percent (2-for-8) from behind the three-point line and 50 percent (8-for16) from the charity stripe. Kennesaw State shot 46.0 percent (23-for-50) from the field, 45.5 percent (5-for11) from three-point land and 59.3 percent (16-for-27) from the free throw line.
The Pacers were done in by 22 turnovers, while the Owls committed just 10 turnovers on the night. KSU converted USC Aiken's 22 turnovers into 22 points.
Kennesaw State held a 32-30 advantage on the boards. Georgy Joseph's eight rebounds served as the game-high.
Burton and
Gray each had five rebounds to lead the USCA.
The Pacers will return to action on Thursday when they host the Phillips 66 Christmas Classic at "The Courthouse" in Aiken, S.C. USC Aiken will play Catawba College at 8:00 p.m. That game will be preceded by a match-up between Augusta State and Belmont Abbey which tips-off at 6:00 p.m. Day two of the classic will see Augusta State playing Catawba at 6:00 p.m. and USC Aiken battling Belmont Abbey at 8:00 p.m.
