Toughness is defined as “the state of being strong enough to withstand adverse conditions or rough handling.” It is also defined as “the ability to deal with hardship or to cope in difficult situations.”
Simply put, University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball standout Kelsey Spurlin could be described as having more toughness than most will endure in a lifetime.
Yet, no matter what is put on the 5-8 redshirt-freshman from Gaffney, S.C., she still prevails with flying colors.
After redshirting in 2016, Spurlin has fought to get back to where she was on the court in high school. At Gaffney H.S., she was a two-time all-region honoree. As a junior, Spurlin led her team to a Region II-4A championship.
Despite facing even more adversity at the start of preseason camp, Spurlin has impressed her teammates, coaches and all of Pacer Nation with her toughness and ability to overcome the odds.
Heading into Tuesday’s match at Francis Marion, Spurlin has seen time in eight matches for 17 sets. With her toughness and never give up attitude, Spurlin will continue seeing even more time on the court in 2017 and beyond.
Check out the interview with Brielle Jungblut as Spurlin gives a glimpse into her life and the obstacles she’s overcome.
