Dedicated. Motivated. Determined. Those are words that people routinely describe junior Kayla Calvert when discussing her effort not only in the classroom, but also on the tennis court.
University of South Carolina Aiken women’s tennis standout Kayla Calvert recently spoke with Brielle Jungblut for the latest Innovative Solutions “A Closer Look.”
Calvert, a multi-talented student-athlete, grew up competing in several sports, including soccer, track and tennis.
After being burned out of tennis in her early high school days, Calvert thought that she would not compete in tennis in college. Once she decided she would compete on the collegiate level, Calvert not only broke into the line-up as a freshman at USC Aiken, but also shined her first two seasons with the team.
Through the first two years, she posted a combined 23 singles victories in the lower and middle half of the line-up. Now, an upperclassmen, Calvert has competed at multiple singles positions while guiding the nationally-ranked team through one of the toughest schedules in the country.
Calvert was a major factor in leading the Pacers to the NCAA Tournament her sophomore campaign and plays a vital role for head coach Steve Dahm’s team as a junior.
Off the court, Calvert is majoring in nursing and is going through arguably the toughest year of her undergraduate life. Jungblut talks with Calvert about her tough major and balancing school along with tennis.
