Gary Asbill is in his first year as the catching and assistant hitting coach.
“I’ve been trying to get Gary back to USC Aiken since I took over as head coach,” Holder said. “He’s one of the best examples I’ve ever witnessed of a player that developed in the numerous areas required to be a high-level student athlete. In my mind, he’s the perfect example for our current players to witness on a daily basis. Not to mention, he’s a great teacher of our sport. We are very proud and also very fortunate to have Gary back in Aiken!”
Asbill, a former standout baseball student-athlete from 2005-10 at USC Aiken, was on the coaching staff from 2018-20.
Asbill has an extensive coaching background. Upon graduating from USC Aiken, he was the assistant baseball coach at South Aiken H.S. Asbill spent time with Saluda Middle School as the varsity football and baseball coach from 2013-15.
He spent time at Ninety Six H.S. as the assistant baseball coach (2015-16) and Port St. Lucie H.S. (2016). Asbill was the assistant baseball coach at Aiken H.S. from 2016-17 before joining the coaching staff at USC Aiken for a three-year span. Upon leaving the staff, he was named the head baseball coach at Aiken H.S.
Asbill was also the head coach of Canes South from 2021-23 and the Canes Scout team (2023). An area scout for the Diamond Prospects (2022-23), he was also the associate head coach for American Leadership Academy Lexington (2023).
During his previous stint with USC Aiken, the Pacers went 35-19 in 2018, 32-22 in 2019 and 12-8 in the COVID-19 shortened season of 2020.
The former ESPN The Magazine academic all-district first-team selection holds a B.A. degree in English and a minor in business management from USC Aiken. Asbill also has a Master of Education degree with a minor in adolescent literacy from Concordia University-Portland and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
