A Closer Look - Season 1 (Nadine Tusiama)
Nadine Tusiama’s starting spot on the USC Aiken women’s tennis team was earned the way a starting spot should be earned: through hard work, overcoming barriers, and being a role model for her teammates and supporters.
Although Tusiama traveled in America for a while, her grasp on the English language did not click right away.
“The language barrier was rough at first, but I feel more comfortable with it now,” said Tusiama.
The Swiss tennis player’s first experience in the United States began when she traveled with families in Miami to visit colleges.
“I was looking for a small college with a flexible class and sports schedule,” claimed Tusiama.
She found USC Aiken through a small agency that sent footage to colleges across America. The same agency Tusiama worked with helped bring over several past USCA players, including Margot Simon.
Before committing to USC Aiken, Tusiama was ready to attend a different college
“After speaking with Margot and the coach, I knew Aiken would be a good fit,” stated Tusiama.
One aspect she was pleasantly surprised about was the team’s high level of play.
“I loved how competitive everyone was, and I could see myself earning a number one or two ranked spot with these girls,” said Tusiama.
As the 2015 season progresses, Tusiama feels the team will thrive in its positive atmosphere.
“We all encourage each other constantly, and if we continue to do so, we can accomplish so much,” she claimed. “The only thing I’m worried about is how we’ll react when someone is down; if one person is feeling negative, we all suffer.”
Tusiama knows in order to be a successful team, they need to remain close and connected throughout the season.
Her personal goals include beating the girls whom she lost to last season and to help the newcomers feel welcome in Aiken.
“I know how it feels when you come to a new school and not know a single person,” recalled Tusiama. “Everyone on the team plays a different role, so it’s important to have someone who can help you when you have questions.”
Tusiama noted that one of the reasons she chose to play at USC Aiken was the helpfulness of Coach Dahm.
“I love playing for him, mainly because he doesn’t put too much pressure on us,” said Tusiama. “He wants what is best for us, and knows school comes before athletics.”
