Four-Run Eighth Sends Pacers Past Braves

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The No. 22 USCA baseball team recorded a hard-fought 13-11 victory at UNC Pembroke Tuesday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 15-4 on the season.

Head coach Keith Gorman's team pushed across six runs in the second for an early lead. After walks to Blake Martin and Salvatore Laimo, Maverick Grigsby singled in Martin. Johann Rodriguez's double to left plated Laimo. Cameron Austin Jr,'s groundout allowed Grigsby to race home. Rodriguez scored on Osmin Melendez's sacrifice fly for a 4-0 cushion. Moments later, Yariel Diaz singled in Chancellor Jennings, who reached on a single up the middle. Martin doubled home Donovan Glisson for a 6-0 advantage.

Up 6-2 in the fourth, Jennings tripled and scored on Diaz's base hit up the middle. Grigsby singled home Diaz, extending the advantage to 8-2.

Trailing 9-8 in the seventh, Martin singled and went to third on Laimo's double to right center field. Martin crossed home on Rodriguez's sacrifice fly, tying the game at 9-9.

Gorman's team plated four runs in the eighth. Donovan Glisson walked and Diaz singled. Martin singled home Glisson and Laimo's base hit drove in Diaz. Rodriguez's triple knocked in Martin and Laimo for a 13-9 lead.

The Braves scored two in the bottom of the eighth, but USCA would not allow another run to cross home.

For the game, Diaz and Martin each had three hits and two RBI. Martin scored three times and Diaz scored twice. Jennings, Laimo, Grigsby and Rodriguez had two hits apiece. Rodriguez knocked in four runs. Jennings, Laimo and Glisson each scored twice.

On the mound, Kerry Herndon-Brown worked two frames with two strikeouts. Luke Norman worked the third inning. Kyle Stock tossed two innings with three strikeouts. Dylan Dickert and Brady Dunlop each worked a frame. Will Eichler tossed two scoreless innings to get the save with two strikeouts. Dunlop was the pitcher of record and garnered the win.
