DUE WEST, S.C. –
Chancellor Jennings tied the single-game school record with five hits as the USCA baseball team scored five runs in the first and notched an 18-8 victory at Erskine Wednesday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 6-1 on the season while the Flying Fleet drops to 1-7.
Head coach
Keith Gorman's squad got things going in the top of the first.
Evan Harding, Jennings and
Yariel Diaz recorded singles to load the bases. With one down,
Salvatore Laimo doubled in two. After an out and a walk to
Maverick Grigsby,
Joshua Johnson was hit by a pitch, plating Diaz.
Osmin Melendez knocked in two for a quick 5-0 lead.
After an RBI by Laimo in the second made it 6-0, Erskine plated two in the third.
USCA broke open the game with an eight-run fourth inning. Jennings singled and swiped second. After a walk to Diaz,
Blake Martin knocked in Jennings. Laimo's base knock pushed across Diaz.
Donovan Glisson's double scored Martin and Grigsby's base knock made it 11-2. Grigsby came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Harding and Jennings crushed a two-run shot for a 14-2 advantage.
The Pacers plated a run in the fifth and scored two more in the seventh – with an RBI from
Cameron Austin Jr., and another from Melendez. Melendez tacked on another RBI in the ninth, driving in
Johann Rodriguez for the team's final run.
For the game, Jennings led the way with five hits, including a home run and a double. He drove in two and scored three times. Grigsby posted four hits, two RBI and scored three times while Laimo tallied three hits, four RBI and crossed home twice. Glisson, Harding, Melendez and Rodriguez had two hits apiece. Melendez tallied four RBI while Johnson had two. Diaz scored three times. Glisson and Rodriguez each scored twice.
On the mound,
Myles Chabi got the start and worked three innings with a strikeout.
Dylan Dickert tossed two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.
Ron Robinson pitched two frames while
Kyle Stock had a strikeout in the eighth.
Jared Huse and
Will Eichler combined to work the final inning. Eichler had a strikeout.
