Emelifeonwu’s Huge Game Sends Pacers Past Bobcats

AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA women's basketball team recorded a 60-44 PBC victory over Georgia College & State University Saturday afternoon in front of a tremendous crowd.

The Pacers are now 4-11 on the season, including 1-6 in PBC play.

Head coach Brittany Batts' team was led by Monique Emelifeonwu's 17-point, 11-rebound, six-block performance. Additionally, she had three steals in the win. Ioanna Stefanaki came off the bench to net 14 points and snag five rebounds. Mackenna Nix had eight points while Makaylei Snyder added seven. Zenia Palaska totaled five points while Destiny Harman had three. Mahkayla Premo and Riley Miller had two points apiece.

Emelifeonwu netted the first five points of the contest, including three from downtown off a pass from Snyder. Moments later, Emelifeonwu found Palaska for a shot from distance, in which she banked in, for an 8-2 advantage. Emelifeonwu canned another shot from deep for a 13-4 edge en route to a 13-6 advantage after the first quarter.

Leading 13-10, Stefanaki and Miller buried jumpers for a seven-point cushion at the 3:15 mark. Batts' team hit five free throws the remainder of the quarter, taking a 22-16 lead into intermission.

Down 25-24, Stefanaki hit a free throw while Snyder made two. Harman found Stefanaki for a three-point bucket at the 4:58 mark, giving the team a 30-25 lead. Nix connected with Stefanaki for a basket. A bucket from Stefanaki extended the margin to nine, 36-27. Up 36-29, Snyder and Harman drilled shots from downtown for a 13-point advantage.

With just under six minutes to go, McDermott took a pass from Stefanaki for a lay-up. Emelifeonwu made an inside shot before Nix hit a charity toss for a 49-37 lead. Holding a 52-42 edge, Nix converted a lay-up off a stellar pass from Stefanaki. She hit a free throw for a 55-42 advantage with 1:11 to go. USCA hit its free throws down the stretch for win.  

For the game, USCA hit 17-of-48 from the floor, including seven-of-19 from downtown. The team drained 19 charity tosses. The Pacers netted 18 points in the paint and converted 27 turnovers into 25 points. Batts' team recorded 26 points off the bench.

USCA's strong defense allowed just six points in the first quarter, which marked the fifth fewest points allowed in the program's history in the first frame.
