Pacers Sweep Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The USCA softball team swept Newberry Wednesday afternoon by scores of 7-4 and 8-1.

The Pacers are now 4-2 on the season.

Head coach Jaclin Poole's team jumped on top of the Wolves with a pair of runs in the first inning. Peri Rouillard reached on an error and moved to second when Lydia Johnson got on base by an error. Mallory Shaver blasted a pitch to center field for a double, scoring both Pacers for a 2-0 lead.

Trailing 3-2 in the third, Shaver roped a double to left center field and moved to third on Kate Newberry's base knock to right field. Shaver raced home on Autumn Fisher's sacrifice fly, knotting the contest at 3-3.

Poole's team took the lead in the fourth. Alexis Stout rocketed a one-out double down the left field line and Madison Rogers entered as a pinch runner. After moving to third on a groundout, Rogers scampered home on a wild pitch for a one-run advantage.

Johnson reached on an error to lead off the fifth and swiped second. Two batters later, Johnson raced across the plate on Newberry's base hit to the gap in right center field. USCA tacked on a run in the sixth when Tara McGee scored on Johnson's base hit to right center field. McGee opened the frame with a hit up the middle.

Shaver started the seventh with a single and went to third on Newberry's double to center field. She scored on Anna Turner's sacrifice fly, pushing the score to 7-4.

For the game, Newberry and Shaver had three hits apiece. Shaver drove in two and scored twice. Johnson posted two hits and crossed home twice in the win.

In the circle, Payton Baker went the distance for the win. She had four strikeouts and gave up four runs on eight hits.

Game two saw USCA break through in the third inning. Mollie Rollings led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Rouillard's bunt. Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly, driving in Rollings. Shaver followed her up with another sacrifice fly, driving in Rouillard.

Kaliyah Hensic pushed the margin to 3-0 with a solo blast in the fourth frame. After Stout singled, Rollings crushed a two-run round-tripper for a 5-0 advantage.

Up 5-1 in the fifth, Newberry launched a solo homer with one away. Hensic drove in Fisher before Stout drove in Hensic for an 8-1 advantage.

For the game, Newberry led the way with three hits, including a home run. Hensic, Rollings, Rouillard and Stout had two hits apiece. Hensic and Rollings drove in two apiece while Hensic and Rollings each scored twice.

In the circle, Lakyn Phillips got the start and worked six innings. She struck out 11 in the win. Ally Fleming worked the final stanza and had two strikeouts.

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they play at North Greenville for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
