MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The USCA women's basketball team secured a 64-62 victory at Georgia College & State University Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 4-15 overall, including 1-8 in PBC play.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Serena Baker and
Rhiannon Saller with 12 points apiece. Baker snagged seven boards while Saller had five rebounds and two blocks.
Paris Webster added nine points and two assists while
Sami Bardonaro and
Molly Burns had eight points apiece.
Kendall Parker chipped in seven points and
Destiny Harman added five.
Gracie Huffard and
Riley Simmons scored two points and one point, respectively. Huffard had six rebounds while Simmons snagged 10.
After being outscored 16-7 in the first quarter, USCA pulled within two at halftime with a stellar 10 minutes of play. Saller got things going with a jumper just 38 seconds into the frame. Baker netted a three-ball before Simmons found Huffard for a jumper. A Burns three-point basket propelled the Pacers to a 17-16 advantage at the 6:40 mark.
GCSU fought back and embarked on a 9-2 run before Miller's team answered with four consecutive points by Saller, include a turn-around jumper at the buzzer to make it 25-23 at halftime.
The Bobcats opened the third frame with a 7-0 run before Baker quieted the crowd with a lay-up off a pass from Saller. Harman converted a lay-up as did Saller, making it 32-29. Down 42-35, Simmons made a free throw and Parker hit a pair of charity tosses. A Webster lay-up pulled the visitors within two at 42-40 going into the final quarter.
Trailing 48-42, Baker hit a pair of free throws at the 8:19 mark. Parker hit a charity toss and Bardonaro drilled a three-point bucket off a pass from Webster, knotting the game at 48-48.
The back-and-forth affair saw GCSU take a 58-53 lead before Bardonaro connected with Webster for a three-point basket at the 2:12 mark. Trailing 61-56, Webster hit two free throws with 1:32 to go. Parker converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 34 ticks on the clock, knotting the contest at 61-61.
Saller blocked a shot with five seconds to play and snagged a rebound with three seconds to go. She was fouled and calmly hit both free throws for a two-point cushion. GCSU was fouled and the home team made one free throw.
Miller's team gained possession and Parker was fouled. She hit one-of-two for a 64-62 lead with one second to play. The Bobcats missed a last-second shot, securing the victory for USCA.
For the game, USCA hit 22-of-61 (36.1 percent) from the floor, including seven-of-22 (31.8 percent) from downtown. The squad canned 13 free throws.
The Pacers dished out 11 points and recorded 22 points off the bench. USCA secured 15 points off 13 turnovers and totaled 11 second-chance points in the win.
