HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The USCA volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Coker Friday evening in the season opener.
The Pacers are now 1-0 while the Cobras fall to 0-3.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.
Head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by
Anna Sommer's match-best 13 kills. She also hit .524 to go along with a pair of blocks in the win.
Emily Lammers hit double figures with 10 kills while
Gyöngyvér Araczki and
Lexi Rogers had eight kills each. Araczki posted a .500 attack percentage.
Rookies
Ana Cate Loftus and
Chloe Duzenack totaled five kills and three kills, respectively.
Tabor Scanlon dished out a match-best 23 assists while fellow newcomer
Sidney Hogan notched 16 kills. Hogan also served up a match-high three aces.
Defensively,
Sadie McKay stepped into the libero jersey for the first time and promptly recorded a match-high 20 digs. Rogers tallied 11 digs while Scanlon had eight.
A kill by Lammers off a pass from Scanlon made it 10-7 in the first set. Leading 12-11, Duzenack hammered home a kill before Rogers and Sommer combined for a block for a three-point edge. With the score 16-15 in favor of USCA, Rogers got momentum on the visitors' side with a thunderous kill. Araczki, Rogers and Scanlon garnered the next three points for a four-point margin. Up 23-19, an error by the Cobras and a kill from Loftus secured the six-point victory.
The Pacers started the second set with a 4-0 run and led 7-3 after a point from Loftus. Holding an 11-9 lead, Loftus posted a kill and two errors by Coker made it a five-point contest. Up 18-14, Sommer and Rogers accounted for back-to-back points. Two miscues by Coker extended the margin to eight, 22-14. Araczki ended the frame with a kill off a pass from Scanlon (25-18).
Down 4-2 in the third stanza, Lammers started a run for USCA. Rogers added an ace and a bad set pushed the score to 5-4. Lammers and Rogers each had kills while the home team committed three more errors, giving the Pacers a 10-4 lead. Up 11-7, Sommer started a 5-0 spurt with a kill. The Cobras pulled within three at 23-20, but Sommer gave the visitors a 24-20 advantage. Two plays later, a service error sealed the victory for USCA.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final day of the tournament. USCA squares off against Belmont Abbey at 2:30 p.m., before taking on Wingate at 4:45 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
