USC Aiken Falls To Augusta In Saturday’s Doubleheader

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of hard-fought games at Augusta Saturday.

Game scores were 5-4 and 4-2.

The Pacers are now 23-16 on the season, including 8-9 in league play.

Head coach Jaclin Poole's team got on the board in the second inning. Kate Newberry led off the frame with a solo blast for a 1-0 advantage. Mallory Shaver followed it up with a single to center field. Skylar Morley drew a walk and Grace Ann Thompkins came in for Shaver as a pinch runner. A fly ball allowed both runners to move up 60 feet. Ella Stone laid down a bunt, squeezing Thompkins for a two-run margin.

Leading 2-1 in the fourth, Morley reached on an error by the second baseman. A few pitches later, Chloe Phillips rocketed an offering over the center field fence for a two-run homer, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead.  

The Jaguars scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, tying the contest at 4-4. AU managed to plate the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

For the game, Chloe Phillips led the offense with two RBI on the round-tripper. Newberry had a solo home run while Morley tripled. Stone also drove in a run.

In the circle, Lakyn Phillips struck out 10 batters while throwing the complete game.

Game two saw AU take a 4-0 lead, but the Pacers got on the board in the fourth. Dixon doubled to center field and Stone came in as a pinch runner. Newberry doubled home Stone, making it 4-1.

Still trailing 4-1 in the sixth, Dixon crushed a pitch, recording her 10th round-tripper of the season and pulling the squad within two.   

For the game, Dixon posted three hits while Newberry had two. Chloe Phillips, Stone and Grace Ann Thompkins recorded base knocks. Dixon recorded a home run and a double while Newberry posted a double. Dixon and Stone each scored runs for Poole's squad.

In the circle, Payton Baker went the distance and had five strikeouts.
