USC Aiken Takes Game One From Georgia Southwestern

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team recorded a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern Friday evening in a PBC contest.

The Pacers are now 28-18 on the season, including 11-11 in PBC play.

Head coach Jaclin Poole's team trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth inning. With one down, Taylor Butts reached on an error. Two batters later, Jena Dewalt bounced a single through the right side of the infield. Abigail Wyatt entered as a pinch hitter and was promptly hit by an offering, loading the bases. Austyn Dixon dribbled a ball toward the middle, plating Butts and Dewalt for the 2-1 advantage.

The Hurricanes were threatening in the sixth, but USC Aiken ended the frame. After a single, GSW had a runner go to third. The Pacers caught a runner between second and third with the unique 7-9-2-4 putout.

In the seventh inning, Butts threw out two batters at first base before venturing into shallow right field to snag the final out of the game.

For the game, Dewalt recorded two base hits and scored once. Dixon drove in two while Butts also scored in the victory.

In the circle, Lakyn Phillips tossed the complete game. She had eight strikeouts and gave up just one run on four hits. She walked just two while tossing 118 pitches.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final games of the regular season. Prior to the first game, the seniors will be honored in a ceremony. Following the first game, USC Aiken will recognize several students during Faculty-Staff Appreciation. After the second game, a ceremony will be held to close out J.H. Satcher Field.
