AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Claflin Saturday afternoon by scores of 14-1 and 15-7.
The Pacers are now 6-10 on the season, including 2-0 in PBC play.
In the bottom of the first,
Josh Sharp reached on an error, swiped second and went to third on a wild pitch.
Capers Molinaroli blasted a double down the left field line, driving in Sharp. A
Dalton Graves double put him on third.
Kaden Usry walked and
Joseph Mozingo registered a three-RBI double to left center field, clearing the bases for a 4-0 advantage.
USC Aiken extended the margin to 5-0 an inning later when Graves singled in Sharp, who had reached on an infield hit. Mozingo scored in the third when he crossed home plate as
Bradley White II reached on a fielder's choice.
Leading 6-0, a seven-run fourth inning propelled the Pacers to a 13-0 lead. Molinaroli scored on a single. Mozingo knocked in Graves before
Doom Dennis ripped a single to left field, driving in Usry. White II blasted a double that drove in Mozingo and Dennis.
Cade Bouknight scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brock Myers. Sharp finished the scoring when he drove in White II on a single through the left side of the infield. An unearned run in the fifth allowed Dennis to score for a 14-0 margin.
For the game, Graves and Molinaroli had three hits apiece. Sharp, Mozingo, Dennis, Bouknight and White II had two hits apiece. Mozingo drove in four runs while White II had three RBI and Myers had two. Molinaroli, Graves, Sharp, Mozingo, Dennis and Usry all crossed home twice.
On the mound,
Jacob Fletcher worked six strong innings to get the victory.
AJ Deibel tossed the seventh frame to close out the Panthers in the run rule victory.
In game two, Claflin jumped out to a comfortable lead by plating four runs in the opening half of the first inning.
In the home half of the first, head coach
Michael Holder's team reduced the visitor's lead to three.
Brock Myers got things going for the Pacers with a single to right field.
Josh Sharp laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt that advanced Myers to second.
Dalton Graves smacked a two-two pitch down the right-field line pushing Myers to third. A sacrifice fly by the designated hitter,
Luke Parker, scored Myers bringing the score at the end of the first 4-1 in favor of the Panthers.
Claflin added two more in the top of the second but USC Aiken answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Doom Dennis singled to left center on the first pitch he saw and moved to second after
Cannon Frost was hit by a pitch. With two runners on,
Bradley White II singled to center field advancing both base runners.
Wyatt McPherson then singled through the left side scoring both Dennis and Frost, White was eliminated at second. After two fly outs, the home team found themselves behind 6-3.
The Pacers continued to claw their way back by adding five runs in the fourth inning. White II started the inning with a four-pitch walk and then was moved to second on a five-pitch walk to McPherson. Myers singled to third, loading the bases. Sharp walked on the next at bat advancing everyone on the bags and scoring White II.
Dalton Graves then singled through the right side pushing Sharp to third and scoring McPherson and Myers. Graves stole second base putting two runners in scoring position. With one away,
Jack Hobson grounded out, but Graves was able to advance to third and Sharp scored. Dennis earned an RBI when he singled to the shortstop, scoring Graves. At the end of the fourth, the home team led 8-6.
USC Aiken added three runs in the sixth inning. With one out,
Cade Bouknight reached base on an error. Dennis reached base on a fielder's choice and he and Bouknight each advanced an extra base on a throwing error. Bouknight was the first to cross home plate when Frost grounded out but collected the RBI. White II took a four-pitch walk putting runners on the corners. The second run crossed home on a double steal plating Dennis and moving White II to second. McPherson singled up the middle scoring White II and increased the Pacers lead to 11-6.
After a pitching change by the Panthers in the seventh inning, Sharp walked as the first batter. He promptly stole second. After a lineout by Graves, Sharp found himself on third due to a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Parker plated Sharp for the lone run of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, USC Aiken added three more runs. With one out, White II was hit by pitch and then advanced to second after a single by McPherson. With Myers at the plate, a fielder's choice followed by an error pushed McPherson to third and scored White II. Sharp then singled to center, scoring both McPherson and Myers. Going into the final inning, the Pacers held a comfortable 15-6 lead.
The visitors mounted a small comeback, adding a run in the top half of the ninth but that was as close as they would get.
For the game, Myers, Dennis and McPherson each had three hits. Graves added two hits while Sharp, Parker, Frost and White each had singles. Sharp and McPherson led the team with three RBI each and Myers and White II each scored three runs.
On the mound,
Hunter Steger got the start and worked 3.2 innings striking out three.
Matt Garcia came in as relief and got the win working 5.1 innings while allowing one run and striking out 12 against one walk.
