AIKEN, S.C. – The USCA men's basketball team cruised to a 109-65 win over Washington Adventist Thursday evening.
The Pacers are now 3-0 on the season while the Shock stand at 1-6.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Jalen McCoy's team-high 20 points on eight-of-11 shooting from the floor. He also canned four charity tosses.
Davion Cunningham added 16 points and six rebounds while
Caleb Byrd had 14 points.
Rhyjon Blackwell and
Kaleb Siler tallied 10 points apiece.
Rafael Rubel accounted for nine markers, four rebounds, four assists and four steals while
Simeon German had four points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Dwight Canady, Jr., totaled nine points while
Mason Grant had six.
Tyler Husband posted five points and
Chedlet Delva added two.
USCA rattled off 14 of the first 16 points of the game and never looked back. Tied at 2-2, McCoy hit a jumper. Rubel buried a three-ball before Blackwell converted a lay-up on the break. McCoy followed up a miss with a tip-in before Cunningham nailed a shot from downtown off a pass from German at the 15:31 mark for a 14-2 edge.
Up 21-11, Canady, Jr., made an inside shot off a pass from Siler. On the ensuing play, Siler hit a shot in the lane for a 25-11 advantage. Two charity tosses from Siler pushed the margin to 16 with 10:33 to play in the half.
Leading 30-17, Siler nailed an old-fashioned three-point play. At the 6:07 mark, Rubel drilled a step-back three-point basket with the shot clock winding down. Another shot from downtown – this time by Cunningham – extended the lead to 41-20. Cunningham drained another three-point bucket for a 44-22 advantage. Vanderslice's team maintained a 51-26 lead at the break.
A jumper by McCoy made it 59-28 at the 17:44 mark of the second half. USCA continued to push the ball and score in transition, taking a 75-35 lead at the 13:10 mark on a bucket from Siler. A basket from Grant with 4:03 to play gave the team the largest lead of the contest at 46 (104-58).
For the game, USCA hit 41-of-68 from the floor (60.3 percent), including 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from downtown. The squad held a 47-29 edge on the glass. The Pacers dominated in the paint, outscoring WAU 52-26. Vanderslice's team also had 32 points on the break and converted 11 turnovers into 19 points.
The 109 points is tied for the seventh most scored by USCA in the Division II era. The program also had 109 in the win over Young Harris on Feb. 2, 2019.
