GREENWOOD, S.C. – The USCA women's basketball team dropped a 103-68 decision to No. 14 Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon at Lander.
The Pacers are now 0-2 on the season while the Eagles stand at 2-0.
USCA jumped out to a 4-0 lead as
Rhiannon Saller hit a free throw before
Destiny Harman converted an old-fashioned three-point play. Trailing 7-4,
Jaya Nelson and Harman buried back-to-back three-point buckets as
Paris Webster dished out assists on both field goals.
Serena Baker canned a jumper, knotting the score at 14-14, but the Eagles embarked on a 9-2 spurt over the final 56 seconds of the frame for a 23-16 advantage.
Webster's field goal pulled the Pacers to within nine, 27-18, at the 9:04 mark of the second quarter. A lay-up by
Kendall Parker off a pass from Harman made it a 10-point game, 30-20, with 6:56 to play in the half. However, C-N went on a 15-5 run to close the second quarter.
Molly Burns and
Morgan McDermott buried three-point shots in the third quarter while Baker converted a three-point play. Saller and
Gracie Huffard each connected on inside shots during the 10-minute stanza, but USCA trailed 74-43 entering the fourth frame.
Huffard, who hit the final shot of the third quarter, drilled the first four points for the Pacers in the fourth quarter.
Riley Simmons connected on a shot from distance at the 7:12 mark before Parker hit a jumper a minute later.
Makaylei Snyder found Simmons for another bucket from deep at the 5:52 mark.
Snyder converted a lay-up with 4:33 to play and USCA netted six consecutive points on back-to-back three-point shots from Harman and Simmons. Burns and Simmons tallied field goals with under two minutes to play for the final four points for the designated visitors.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by Simmons' 13-point, four-rebound effort. Harman tallied 10 points, four rebounds and three assists while Burns, Parker and Webster netted seven points apiece.
Huffard chipped in six points and four rebounds while Baker added five points. Snyder totaled four markers while McDermott, Nelson and Saller and three points apiece.
For the game, USCA hit 25-of-65 (38.5 percent) from the floor, including eight-of-21 (38.1 percent) from downtown. The team grabbed 36 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass. Miller's squad had 41 points off the bench in the contest.
