USC Aiken Knocks Off Valdosta State, 3-1

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team notched a 3-1 victory over Valdosta State Saturday afternoon in the team's final match of the PBC-Gulf South Crossover.

The Pacers are now 9-1 on the season. Set scores were 25-18, 27-29, 25-23, 25-11.

Head coach Glenn Cox's team was led by Gyöngyvér Araczki and Anna Sommer. Araczki had 12 kills while hitting .458 to go along with three blocks. Sommer added 15 kills and two blocks.

Emily Lammers registered 11 kills to go along with 18 digs. Lexi Rogers chipped in seven kills and 19 digs and Sadie McKay notched six kills along with 13 digs.

Mallory Barash dished out 47 assists while posting 12 digs. Kari Mercer led everyone with 22 digs. She also tallied a pair of kills in four attempts for a .500 attack percentage.  

USC Aiken jumped on top in the opening frame by scoring the first five points of the match. Sommer opened it with a kill before blocking the next point. After two errors by VSU, Rogers found the court for a kill. Leading 21-17, the teams traded points before Araczki slammed home a pass from Barash. Rogers served up an ace and an error by the visitors made it 25-18.

After dropping a hard-fought 29-27 second set, the Pacers trailed 12-11 in the third frame. Araczki tied the contest with a kill. She then blocked an attempt. An error by VSU and a kill from Mercer made it 15-12. Araczki blocked a shot and moments later had a kill for an 18-14 advantage. Tied at 21-21, a ball handling error gave USC Aiken the lead. Lammers added to it with a kill but the Blazers tied it at 23-23. Araczki slammed home a kill and an error allowed Cox's squad to prevail 25-23.

The Pacers carried the momentum into the fourth frame and jumped out to a 7-1 margin. Up 3-1, a bad set by VSU and a kill by Lammers made it 5-1. Two plays later, Lammers tacked on a kill for a six-point edge. Up 9-3, USC Aiken embarked on a 6-0 spurt to essentially put the match away. Leading 22-11, McKay found the court before Lammers ended the match with back-to-back kills.
