AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team posted a pair of wins over PBC foe Augusta Wednesday afternoon by scores of 9-7 and 8-0.
The Pacers are now 17-25 on the season, including 9-11 in PBC play.
Head coach
Jaclin Poole's team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Skylar Morley reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Taylor Butts.
Ella Stone doubled to right center, plating Morley.
Holly Daum reached on an error, allowing Stone to score. With the bases loaded,
Mallory Shaver used her patience and earned a walk to make it 3-0.
AU took a 5-3 lead in the third but USC Aiken struck back in the bottom of the frame. With one down, Butts walked. Two batters later, Daum garnered a base on balls. A passed ball pushed both runners up a base but
Jessica Stanley walked to load the bags.
Shi Cain singled in two before
Emily Ayers knocked in a run for a 6-5 advantage.
Tied at 6-6 in the fifth, Cain singled home Daum, who had doubled two batters earlier. Up 7-6 in the sixth frame, Shaver earned a walk.
Ashlyn White came in as a pinch runner.
Kadence Adams entered as a pinch hitter and doubled in White and Butts for the 9-6 lead.
The Jaguars added a run in the seventh inning but
Payton Baker forced a line drive out to Morley to end the game.
Cain led the way with two hits and three RBI. Stanley had two hits, including a double, and scored once. Adams drove in two. Daum scored three times while Butts scored twice.
Baker recorded the complete-game win, striking out seven in the victory.
In game two, Stanley singled to lead off the frame. A walk to Cain put two runners on and they were able to trot home when
Jena Dewalt uncorked an offering and blasted it high over the right field wall for a 3-0 lead.
USC Aiken added to the margin in the second. Butts singled and moved to second on a groundout. Daum reached on a fielder's choice and Stanley ripped a pitch to center field, scoring Butts. Moments later, Daum raced home on a double steal attempt on a throwing error.
Poole's team added a pair of runs in the fourth. Shaver belted a single to center field, scoring
Grace Ann Thompkins, who came in as a pinch runner for Cain. Two batters later, Morley went to the opposite field for a single, driving in Ayers for a 7-0 margin.
In the bottom of the fifth, USC Aiken had two runners on, setting the stage for Ayers, who promptly rocketed an 0-2 pitch off the wall in left field for the 8-0 final.
For the game, Stanley led everyone with a tremendous four-hit performance. She drove in one and scored once. Ayers posted three hits while Morley added two. Dewalt drove in three in the win.
Lakyn Phillips went the distance for the complete-game shutout victory. She had one strikeout and faced just 20 batters in the five-inning win.
